MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? Negotiators have been talking through a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe to a man holding a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground shelter in rural Alabama.

The standoff entered its second full day Thursday after authorities said a gunman pulled the boy off a school bus and killed the driver Tuesday.

The police chief of the adjacent town of Pinckard, James Arrington, says that the two are in a bunker that's about 4 feet underground and has about 6-by-8 feet of floor space.

He says the man identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes has been sleeping some.

The chief also says the man holds strong anti-government views and the FBI has reason to believe the shooting of the driver was a hate crime.

NYC auction house to offer Warhol works online

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City auction house will offer an online auction of Andy Warhol's works, giving a broader audience the chance to own a piece of his art.

It's Christie's first online-only Warhol sale. About 125 paintings, drawings, photographs and prints will be offered from Feb. 26 through March 5. Pre-sale estimates range from $600 to $70,000.

The auction is being held in partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The works can be previewed online prior to the sale.

Bidders can browse, bid and receive instant updates by email or phone if another bid exceeds theirs.

Christie's and the foundation entered the partnership last fall.

The first live auction raised $17 million for the Warhol Foundation's endowment.

University applications 2013: what subjects are people applying for?

The number of total applicants to UK universities has risen by 3.5% according to UCAS figures. Photograph: Panacea Pictures/Alamy/Alamy

The number of applicants to UK universities has risen by 3.5% according to official figures published today.

The latest release from UCAS looks at the number of applicants in the 2013 cycle and includes all applications considered 'on time' for the 15 January deadline. Around 85% of overall applicants had applied by this time in the 2010 to 2012 application cycles.

The slight increase in applicants this year has been welcomed by universities, after applications fell last year prompted by a rise in tuition fees. Rebecca Ratcliffe writes today:

Universities have welcomed a 3.5% increase in the number of students applying to start university this autumn, but warn applications are still not back on trend.

An increase in the number of UK (2.8%) and overseas students (EU 4.9% and non-EU 9.6%) means application rates have recovered slightly on last year, when higher fees prompted a 8.7% fall in applications.

But Pam Tatlow, chief executive of the university thinktank Million+, points out that applications are still down when compared with January 2011 (-4.2%) and January 2010 (-2%).

The release is packed with interesting data and gives us our first indication of the demand for higher education in the UK this year. Here are the key figures:

Overall applications

Total applicant numbers are up - 558,898 in 2013 compared to 540,073 at the same point last year. The number of applicants from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have increased although Wales saw a decrease of 2.1%.

Applications from EU countries has increased by 4.9% and the number of applicants from outside the EU has risen by 9.6%. At the same point last year applications were down from the UK and European countries. Of the non-European countries, Malaysia recorded the biggest rise in applicants at 22% followed by Australasia with a 12% increase.

Around 83% of overall EU applicants, and around 60% of overall non-EU applicants, had applied by the January deadline in the 2010 to 2012 application cycles.

Age

The number of UK 18-year olds applying to universities has risen very slightly, 0.8% compared to 2011, this represents an increase of just over 2,000 people. However of the total applicants (including applicants of European and non-European domicile) there has been a 1.8% drop in 18-year olds.

The biggest decrease in total applications by age group has been by those aged 30 to 39 years old - there are 842 less than last year. Last year the UCAS figures showed that the number of 19-year old applicants had dropped by over 17,000 since the previous year. The figures published today show that the biggest increase in total applications by age group has been 19-year olds - 10,894 more than in 2012.

The biggest percentage decrease for applications by age group has been for 40 year-olds and over with 7% less applicants from this age group than in 2012. The number of applications by 24-year olds has also decreased, down by 0.3%.

Gender

Male students may be outnumbered by females at most UK universities but the the total number of male applicants for the 2013 cycle has jumped by 3.8% compared to last year. Female applicants have increased by 3.2% and still outnumber male applicants with 319,752 female applicants compared to 239,146 male applicants in 2013.

Subject

Due to the increase in applications, many subjects have seen a slight rise in applications. Subjects allied to medicine have recorded the biggest rise in applicants - 17,414 more than in 2012 - followed by biological sciences. Computer sciences have seen the biggest percentage increase with a 12.3% rise in applications, representing an increase of 9,439 more applicants than last year.

It seems social sciences, arts and languages are feeling the biggest decreases; non-European and European language courses both recorded decreases of more than 6%. Applications for sciences combined with social sciences or arts are down by 4.5%.

The table below shows total applications by subject group. There are also tables showing applicants by UK region of domicile and by global region. the downloadable spreadsheet contains additional data on application breakdowns by age group, country of domicile and country of institution. The First BlackBerry 10 Device To Make U.S. Debut In March, Coming To All Four Major Carriers

availabilityWe're right in the thick of RIM's big BlackBerry 10 announcement in New York, and it's been nothing if not eventful so far. CEO Thorsten Heins just recently unveiled the new BlackBerry Z10 (full review here) a little while ago, and now the topic of conversation has turned to something else: availability. RIM's first BlackBerry 10-powered device will first appear in the UK and Canada, with sales beginning tomorrow across the pond and Feb. 5 in the Great White North for $149.99 on a 3-year contract.

The Importance Of Branding Your Business - Graphics/Video ...

The Importance Of Branding Your Business by erad(m): 11:30am On Jan 28Prior to launching an advertising campaign or developing a marketing strategy, it is crucial that you determine your brand?s identity. Simply put, a brand?s identity is its singular ?personality? that serves to identify a company or business and distinguish it from its competitors. Although ?branding? has become a buzzword popularized by entrepreneurs, many people still have trouble grasping what the term means.

So what is branding, exactly? Branding is successfully creating a brand identity that will not only make your business more appealing in comparison to your competitors, but it will also convince consumers that in a sea of prospects, your business is the only one capable of satisfying their needs. Many different components can go into developing a brand, including eye-catching designs and a unique name; however, a brand encompasses more than just a logo. It?s what clients take away from the experience of working with you. It?s what your company stands for and is known for within your market. Coming up with a brand means coming up with what your company promises to deliver, whether that?s perfectly seasoned gourmet pizzas or impeccably tailored shirts. Branding includes the overall style of your company and the meaning it has to clients. Ideally, it would motivate people to buy your products or use your services.

If you don?t define your brand, you create the possibility that someone else will do it for you, including your competitors. Defining you brand allows you to control?or at least influence?how others perceive you. An effective brand marketing strategy minimizes your company?s chances of fading into the background and solidifies your reputation as a veritable force to be reckoned with. Strong branding demonstrates that a company aspires to something greater than just business as usual. By raising your status from a basic commodity to a brand, consumers will be willing to pay a premium for your services or products.

Ultimately, branding is perhaps most essential because it increases the chances that people will remember you, even as the battle for consumers? attention (and money) rages on. A fully-developed brand identity will push your business to the forefront of consumers? minds, making them more likely to recognize you, enlist your services, and remain loyal long after the conclusion of your professional relationship. It takes a lot of time to build (and maintain) these valuable customer relationships. Let me give you a few examples of successful branding:

-Coca Cola: The majority of people instantly recognize this brand. Their logo, the Christmas songs, TV commercials, ads and cans are a part of the Coca Cola branding strategy. This brand has been around for decades, allowing its message to go from generation to generation, and all of Coca Cola?s efforts have paid off. Wouldn?t you agree it is quite hard to imagine a world without Coca Cola?

-McDonald?s: Remember when you were a kid and going to McDonald?s was a treat? Of course you do! This is why you will probably take your (future) children to come and have a quick bite here every once in a while. McDonald?s introduced Happy Meals for children, including a small toy in every meal box. A smart move, given the fact that competitors soon offered similar deals. Furthermore, they incorporated the word ?Mac/Mc? into their product names, like ?McNuggets? or the famous ?Big Mac.? These decisions have had major influence on the way customers perceive the brand.

-Apple: Apple has found a way to become one of the most popular brands in the world by branding themselves successfully. Mac computers aren?t for just anyone, nor are the iPad or the iPhone. The late Steve Jobs was known for his way of presenting new products to the public and used his black turtleneck sweater as part of his strategy. Even the use of putting an ?i? in their product names is all part of Apple?s branding strategy. The designs of the products, the campaigns and product launches are all in sync with Apple?s style and its branding.

You can say that these companies have become experts in business branding, based on their successes. Branding could be perceived as part of marketing or as a separate component, but it is definitely closely related to marketing. Before you start diving into concepts to market your business, make sure you have determined a brand identity and are aware of all the aspects that come with brand management.

thanks to op, i think the only thing am missing out here is the slogan, my business is yet to have a singular slogan that will encapsulate all part/sections of what i really do. well i have to start thinking seriously about it now.

Re: The Importance Of Branding Your Business by Brand_new(m): 6:57pm On Jan 28Creating a great brand also goes beyond colours and logo. It includes meeting up with customers expectation thereby getting good reviews and referrals from such customers. Facebook and twitters logos would be useless without giving users a great social networking experience. Same goes for other brands who are into other kinds of business.

So branding also includes meeting up with customers expectation or giving users a wholesome experience. It is when a business achieves this that their customers would be proud to identify themselves with such businesses.

Same also goes for creating a wholesome online presence.

Yes it's possible... alot of factors need to be taken into consideration though, because an image already exists and the new image is either going to enhance or correct a negative shadow the previous image might have cast on the business.Re: The Importance Of Branding Your Business by Brand_new(m): 7:26pm On Jan 28

This data is necessarily incomplete. But the more people who are paying attention, the better the data will be. You can help us draw a more complete picture of gun violence in America. If you know about a gun death in your community that isn?t represented here, please tweet @GunDeaths with a citation. (If you?re not on Twitter, you can email slatedata@gmail.com.) And if you?d like to use this data yourself for your own projects, it?s open. You can download it here.

Show Methodology

Each victim under 13 years of age is designated "child"; from 13 to 17: "teen"; 18 and older: "adult."

The same icons used to represent male victims is also used to represent victims of unknown gender.

The same icons used to represent adult victims is also used to represent victims of unknown age group.

The yellow and blue backgrounds represent alternating days.

The information is collected by @gunDeaths from news reports about the deaths. The Slate interactives team and @gunDeaths continually manages and revises the data.

The data are not comprehensive because not all gun-related deaths are reported by the news media. For example, suicides often go unreported.

New York's heat may be warming Siberia

Heat from northern cities from New York to Tokyo could warm winters in Canada and Siberia, according to a new study, but cool the fall in the western US and Eastern Europe.

By Seth Borenstein,?AP Science Writer / January 27, 2013

The Empire State, MetLife and Chrysler buildings are seen against a hazy backdrop in New York in July 2012. Heat rising up from cities such as New York, Paris, and Tokyo might be remotely warming up winters far away in some rural parts of Alaska, Canada, and Siberia, a surprising study suggests.

In an unusual twist, that same urban?heat?from buildings and cars may be slightly cooling the autumns in much of the Western United States, Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, according to the study published Sunday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change.

Meteorologists long have known that?cities?are warmer than rural areas, with the?heat?of buildings and cars, along with asphalt and roofs that absorb?heat. That's called the urban heat?island effect and it's long been thought that the?heat?stayed close to the?cities.

But the study, based on a computer model and the Northern Hemisphere, now suggests the?heat?does something else, albeit indirectly. It travels about half a mile up into the air and then its energy changes the high-altitude currents in the atmosphere that dictate prevailing weather.

"Basically, it changes the flow." said Guang Zhang of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. He wrote the paper with Aixue Hu at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

This doesn't change overall global temperature averages significantly, unlike man-made greenhouse gases that cause global warming. Instead it redistributes some of the?heat, the scientists said.

The changes seem to vary with the seasons and by region because of the way air currents flow at different times of the year. During the winter, the jet stream is altered and weakened, keeping cold air closer to the Arctic Circle and from dipping down as sharply, Hu explained.

The computer model showed that parts of Siberia and northwestern Canada may get, on average, an extra 1.4 degrees to 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 to 1 degree Celsius) during the winter, which "may not be a bad thing," Zhang said. The effect isn't quite as much in northern North Dakota and Minnesota, where temperatures might be about half a degree warmer (0.3 degrees Celsius), and even less along the East Coast.

In contrast, Europe and the Pacific Northwest are cooled slightly in the winter from this effect. The jet stream changes prevent weather systems from bringing warmer air from the Atlantic to Europe and from the Pacific to the U.S. Northwest, thus cooling those areas a bit, he said.

The biggest cooling occurs in the fall, but Hu said he's not quite sure why that happens.

Several outside scientists said they were surprised by the study results, calling the work "intriguing" and "clever." But they said it would have to be shown in more than one computer model and in repeated experiments before they could accept this theory.

"It's an interesting and rationally carried out study," said David Parker, climate monitoring chief of the United Kingdom meteorology office. "We must be cautious until other models are used to test their hypothesis."

Mali: Timbuktu mayor says Islamists burned texts

SEVARE, Mali (AP) ? Fleeing Islamist extremists torched a library containing historic manuscripts in Timbuktu, the mayor said Monday, as French and Malian forces closed in on Mali's fabled desert city.

Ousmane Halle said he heard about the burnings early Monday.

"It's truly alarming that this has happened," he told The Associated Press by telephone from Mali's capital, Bamako, on Monday. "They torched all the important ancient manuscripts. The ancient books of geography and science. It is the history of Timbuktu, of its people."

The mayor said Monday that the radical Islamists had torched his office as well as the Ahmed Baba Institute ? a library rich with historical documents ? in an act of retaliation before they fled late last week.

He said he didn't have further details as communications to the city have been cut off.

Ground forces backed by French paratroopers and helicopters took control of Timbuktu's airport and the roads leading to the town in an overnight operation, a French military official said Monday. It marked the latest success in the two-week-old French mission to oust radical Islamists from the northern half of Mali, which they seized more than nine months ago.

French Col. Thierry Burkhard, the chief military spokesman in Paris, said Monday that the town's airport was taken without firing a shot.

"There was an operation on Timbuktu last night that allowed us to control access to the town," he said Monday. "It's up to Malian forces to retake the town."

The Timbuktu operation comes a day after the French announced they had seized the airport and a key bridge in a city east of Timbuktu, Gao, one of the other northern provincial capitals that had been under the grip of radical Islamists, who had turned it into a virtual replica of Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

The French and Malian forces so far have met little resistance from the Islamists, who seized northern Mali in the wake of a military coup in the distant capital of Bamako, in southern Mali.

Timbuktu, which lies on an ancient caravan route, has entranced travelers for centuries, is some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Bamako. During their rule, the militants have systematically destroyed UNESCO World Heritage sites in Timbuktu.

A spokesman for the al-Qaida-linked militants has said that the ancient tombs of Sufi saints were destroyed because they contravened Islam, encouraging Muslims to venerate saints instead of God.

Among the tombs they destroyed is that of Sidi Mahmoudou, a saint who died in 955, according to the UNESCO website.

Timbuktu, long a hub of Islamic learning, is also home to some 20,000 manuscripts, some dating back as far as the 12th century. Owners have succeeded in removing some of the manuscripts from Timbuktu to save them, while others have been carefully hidden away from the Islamists.

The destructions recall tactics used by the Taliban in 2001 when they dynamited a pair of giant Buddhas carved into a mountain in Bamiyan province. Around the same time, the Taliban also rampaged through the national museum, smashing any art depicting the human form, considered idolatrous under their hardline interpretation of Islam. In all, they destroyed about 2,500 statues.
