PFT: Chad Johnson arrested for violation? |? Florio

Te'oAP

It?s essentially a Te?obargo, and the Chargers now admit they won?t be making their second-round pick available to the media at all until the middle of June.

So why are they not letting Te?o talk?? Chargers director of public relations Bill Johnston addressed the situation today on XTRA Sports 1360 in San Diego.

?Right now, anything that he does . . . makes news,? Johnston said.? ?Right now, the news that people are talking about with him is really not the news that we want him to be talking about.? Really, he?s a rookie, he?s a second-round draft pick, yet everybody wants to talk to him.? Well, why?? Well, it all goes back to that stuff that happened back in the winter, and back when he was at Notre Dame.

?To us, that?s not what we want him talking about.? We want him focused on becoming a Charger, on becoming a better player.? Learning our system.? Getting comfortable here.? We want him talking football, talking Chargers, and that?s all we want him focused on right now.? So we?re doing what we think is in his best interests to stay focused and become the best player he can.?

That really doesn?t make much sense, frankly.? Media availability inherently is a distraction, regardless of the topics addressed.? Any time spent talking to the media takes away from Te?o's effort to become a better player and learn the system.

Moreover, the furor regarding the Lennay Kukua nonsense largely has subsided.? It wasn?t, for example, much of an issue during the first session between Te?o and the media on May 10, in connection with the team?s rookie minicamp.

Of course, the controversy can remain relevant if Te?o does things to keep it relevant.? For example, he chose to attend the Maxim party honoring a list of women that included the non-existent Kukua.? Under the circumstances, it?s fair game to ask him why he did it.

It?s not fair game for the Chargers to protect him, or anyone other player simply because the team wants him to talk about certain subjects and not others.? Watch the video from the May 10 session; the kid can handle himself well.? Besides, they picked him knowing what having him on the team would entail.? It?s short-sighted to treat him differently than every other player.

Think of the message that sends this to the locker room, at a time when he?d love nothing more than to simply be one of the guys.? He?s necessarily not one of the guys, because the team is giving him different treatment than the rest of his teammates.

Meanwhile, the team is making the issue even bigger than it should be, giving Te?o yet another topic to address when he finally talks to the media and making it harder for him to lay the foundation for a positive relationship with the folks who buy ink by the truckload.

While it?s hard for any organization to reverse a decision that has been made and implemented, the best move for the Chargers would be to treat Te?o no differently than any other player ? and to hope that the media eventually will do the same thing.

GOP official: ?Institutional barriers? remain for Republican women seeking office

(The Washington Post)

The Republican Party is actively working to recruit more women to run for public office, but they still face "institutional barriers" to getting involved in GOP politics at the ground level, Republican State Leadership Committee President Chris Jankowski said on Monday.

As part of the RSLC's Right Women Right Now project, the organization, which specializes in recruiting and electing Republicans to local offices like state legislatures and attorneys general, provides resources to female candidates to help navigate the candidacy process and helps them overcome what he described as a Republican "old boy network" that undervalues women with public ambitions.

"Sometimes our party does not value them as much," Jankowski told reporters at a morning briefing at the RSLC headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Monday. "They are a great asset as candidates. They bring a different approach to campaigning. We obviously need more women to enter public office and get on that escalator to higher office so that our leadership reflects stronger women in the Republican Party."

The campaign to recruit women is part of the party's Future Majority Caucus project, a nationwide effort to train and nurture promising female and minority candidates. The group spent $5 million on the project in the past cycle. As a service to new candidates, the organization provides access to a ready-made website that offers a fundraising platform, social media expertise, voter outreach tools and training on how to navigate the candidacy application process in each state.

Women, Jankowski said, can face unique hurdles in breaking into Republican circles.

"It's safe to say that they are institutional barriers where we've met with candidates, women who felt like they weren't part of the old boy network," he said, describing what can be a daunting process for someone at the entry level who hasn't run for office before or been involved in local politics. "It can be a bit of a male-dominated club at that level, and it's important that they feel welcome and they're given the same resources, and we're doing it."

Jankowski said the RSLC plans to roll out a new platform of goals for the project at the group's summit in Austin, Texas, next week.

SBDC hosting flood insurance workshop | Colorado Springs ...

The Small Business Development Center will host a free workshop about flood and business insurance from?8 to 10 a.m. tomorrow, May 21, at?the Business of Art Center in Manitou Springs.

A lot of business owners have had trouble making sense of the current business insurance environment, especially as it pertains to flood insurance, said Ingrid Wood, disaster recovery specialist for the Small Business Development Center.

?Where people used to have flood insurance for $500 to $1,000 a year, now they?re getting crazy quotes for $5,000 to $25,000 a year,? Wood said. ?And a lot of them can?t afford to pay that.?

There are other issues as well, including gaps in coverage where flood insurance won?t cover loss-of-business income and typical business insurance doesn?t include flooding.

Since the Waldo Canyon fire changed flood plains and increased the risk of flooding in certain areas, flood insurance has been a major concern for a lot of local business owners, Wood said.

The SBDC planned to organize a workshop when iManitou called and asked if it could partner with the SBDC.

The first part of the workshop will be an open forum with a panel of speakers, including a business insurance expert and representatives from the federal flood insurance program and the state. The second part will be one-on-one counseling with insurance experts for area business owners.

In addition to offering programming, Wood said business insurance expert John Putnam will collect business owners? stories about their insurance with plans to develop a white paper to present to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies later this summer.

Wood said she?s hopeful that these grass-roots efforts will help to create some change at the state level that will require a more reasonable and navigable business insurance environment.

?We?re reaching out to educate business about their insurance options as much as possible,? Wood said.

8 police kidnapped in western Iraq

When I was a kid, we ate plenty of veggies. My family usually grew a garden in the summer, and my grandfather, an erstwhile farmer, kept us in great supply of an endless variety of produce. But, it wasn?t until I moved to New York City that I tasted a ramp. In those days, you could only get them from one guy, a farmer named Rick Bishop, who seemed to have a corner on the season?s wild allium market.

Powerball jackpot could go higher than $600 million

By Karen Brooks

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - The Powerball jackpot being drawn on Saturday night could be even higher than the record $600 million being advertised, pushing it near or above the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, a Texas Lottery official said on Saturday.

"Oftentimes, the advertised amount is lower than what the actual jackpot ends up being," said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery. "It's entirely possible this $600 million jackpot will end up being a bigger jackpot."

The previous record Powerball in November 2012 was advertised at $550 million, she said, but ended up being $587.5 million when the winning numbers were drawn, thanks to last-minute sales.

Lottery officials in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands are waiting for an update at around 1 p.m. EDT from Powerball officials to determine whether the advertised amount will be pushed past $656 million - the largest jackpot in U.S. history, set by the Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012.

That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

As of Saturday morning, the odds of winning the Powerball were one in 175 million, Cripe said.

If Saturday night's drawing yields no winner, all records will be shattered as the jackpot for Wednesday's drawing would go to $925 million.

As exciting as it would be to win nearly a billion dollars next week, players across the country were trying their luck with tickets to take Saturday's jackpot.

"It's only a couple bucks for a small daydream," said Russell Williams, 35, a salesman in Austin, Texas.

In New York City, talent acquisition agent Michelle Amici is also playing and said she would use the winnings to satisfy a few of her passions.

"Not sure that I'd buy anything," she said. "Rather, I'd attempt to quench my wanderlust by traveling the world. I'd also donate a large portion to education reform."

For Texas marketing professional Becky Arreaga, the odds are not so long that she is discouraged about her chances.

"As long as the odds are 1 in anything, I'm in," said Arreaga, a partner at Mercury Mambo marketing firm in Austin. "I truly believe I could be the one."

The popular lottery has not had a winner in two months.

The $2 tickets allow players pick five numbers from 1 to 59, and a Powerball number from 1 to 35. The numbers will be drawn Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EDT in Tallahassee, Florida.

Jarrod S. Chlapowski: South Koreans Sing Against Homophobia (VIDEO)

2013-05-15-yj130428066.jpg

A few weeks ago I was invited to watch the taping of a video for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) in the second floor of a gym in Seoul. I was greeted with applause.

"I don't understand," I said to Lee Jong-geol, the general director of the LGBT group Chingusai ("Between Friends"), who had introduced me to the participants as an American writing about the LGBT movement in Korea. "I haven't done anything. Why are they clapping?"

"We want as many people to see this video as possible," Lee confided. "You can help with that." The South Korean LGBT movement generally has trouble gaining recognition by Western media due to language barriers.

The same week that the video was shot, Rep. Min Hong-chul of the left-leaning Democratic United Party (DUP) had been pushing strongly to codify language banning gays and lesbians from serving in the South Korean military. The bill would have been the first South Korean law explicitly mentioning homosexuality in the military. Chingusai and another LGBT group, DongInRyun ("Solidarity for LGBT Human Rights of South Korea"), led a petition drive to keep the bill from going forward.

As more explicit pro- and anti-LGBT legislation is introduced and debated in South Korea, more and more Koreans are stepping forward in support of LGBT rights. Over 100 Koreans (some gay, most straight) were involved in production. The song is a Korean version of "You Make Me Proud," originally introduced by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir for IDAHO in 2012.

One of the lesbian singers, Ziihiion, joined the video after hearing about violent opposition to the Anti-Discrimination Act currently making the rounds in South Korea's national assembly.

"All people, all loves, all relationships must be respected equally," she said.

As you watch the video, pay attention to the flower, a symbol associated with Chingusai, as it travels from singer to flower pot to innocuous placement in a busy Seoul street, planting the beginnings of a real movement.

Oil falls to near $95 on choppy growth outlook

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell to near $95 per barrel Friday after new signs of a choppy economic recovery in the U.S.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 12 cents to $95.04 a barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 86 cents to close at $95.16 on the Nymex on Thursday.

Applications for U.S. unemployment aid rose last week by 32,000 to a seasonally adjusted 360,000, the highest in six weeks, the Labor Department said. A report on housing was neutral, while manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region fell.

That data came on top of the 17-nation euro region remaining mired in recession after contracting for a sixth-straight quarter in the January-March period.

"Several forces should keep the region in recession, including continued fiscal austerity, poor credit conditions in peripheral economies and weak external demand," analysts at Capital Economics said in a market commentary.

"The US is the only major advanced economy to have achieved steady growth since 2009. The latest data have been mixed, but the fundamentals look strong enough to sustain a solid, if unspectacular, recovery."

Brent crude, a benchmark for many international oil varieties, fell 6 cents to $103.72 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.6 cent to $2.869 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 0.1 cent to $2.91 a gallon.

? Natural gas rose 0.2 cent to $3.934 per 1,000 cubic feet.

I posted this Panasonic deal yesterday and after I went home I almost bought it, so I figured it could use a little more attention. Right now Sears is selling a 42" Panasonic plasma TV (model number TC-P42S60) for $400. Shipping's not free though, so to save $70 you should pick it up in-store. Still: that's a $400 plasma, perfect for most small apartments, at a no-name scratcher TV price. It's even got some smart functionality, if that's your bag. [Sears]

Update: Amazon's price-matched Sears' price, but only with shipping included. So this set from Amazon is $470?and still $600 or more everywhere else. [Amazon]

Cricket-'Jeeks', 'nuffies' and moms targeted by cricketing Facebook

By Greg Stutchbury

WELLINGTON, May 16 (Reuters) - Hunched over desks staring at computer screens paid for in part by New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum, employees at a small Wellington company are hard at work laying the foundations for what they hope will be the next social media revolution.

Targeting the estimated billion players and fans of the English bat-and-ball game around the world, CricHQ aims to build an online community which could be crudely described as Facebook for cricket.

"It's actually a little bit more than Facebook," CricHQ director of marketing Jarred Sewell told Reuters.

"What we're trying to do is create a functional social network to give you a reason to be involved across all levels of cricket.

"We're not there yet, but are on the precipice."

Sewell and his chief executive Simon Baker, who started the company in 2010 with investments from former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and current skipper McCullum, are not the first to realise the potential of the online cricket market.

The runaway success of live-scoring website Cricinfo, marketed through the ESPN brand owned by media giant Walt Disney Co, has led the way for sport online but Sewell is quick to dismiss the comparison.

Cricinfo is only concentrated on "about the top one percent of global cricket", he said, and generating content is expensive because they need to employ live scorers, commentators and journalists at the ground.

CricHQ's free app allows its users, at all levels of cricket from the village green upwards, to capture data such as live scoring, pitch and weather conditions and personal information, then contribute it to the community.

The pool of users will expand rapidly in about five months when the company's scoring and management infrastructure software is rolled out across New Zealand's club cricket competitions.

"New Zealand Cricket is a massive deal simply because it gets the entire country using CricHQ," Sewell said of the agreement signed in February.

"What that data capture leads to is fantastic (and) we wouldn't be able to get the information we needed without them."

The data will feed into "a cricket themed social network" - hence the analogy with Mark Zuckerberg's creation - and players will then be able to build their own profiles and 'follow' friends, family, team mates and elite cricketers.

Those profiles, unlike Cricinfo or on official websites, are theirs to develop how they like, Sewell said, and at the elite level, players will be able to commercialise their profile.

The ability to be able to post adverts from sponsors or provide 'added value content' like images, diaries and video were what attracted the interest of the New Zealand Cricket Players' Association (NZCPA) and their global equivalent, FICA.

"The plan is for them to engage with people who follow them and build a bit of a following around their own profile," NZCPA commercial manager Glen Sulzberger told Reuters.

"The best people who use social media give a little bit of insight into what they're about. If you take that philosophy and engage with people then there is a real ability for players to take control of (the space) and build up a following."

COMMERCIAL RETURN

There has been no shortage of great internet ideas over the last decade and a half but monetising online traffic remains a challenge and goes some way to separating the successes from the failures.

While deals with other national cricketing bodies have been signed, and there are management fees for running club competitions, Sewell said the key to commercial returns would be capturing the data and building the social network with exclusive content to drive subscriptions.

Costing and the subscription models are still being developed, he added, but the added-value content, including performance analysis tools, would also generate revenue.

While attracting tech-savvy sports fans, branded jock-geeks or 'jeeks' by academics, was important, the system had been built to include everyone including the cricket equivalent of 'soccer-moms', Sewell said.

"They may have no interest in elite cricket but are happy to drop their kids off at the park and go do what they need to, then be notified when their children are about to bat or bowl," he said.

"(But) whether you are the smallest fan or an absolute cricket 'nuffie' (fanatic), we want to give you a reason to be on CricHQ."

Cloning, Stem Cells Long Mired In Legislative Gridlock

After President Obama overturned Bush-era policy restricting federal funding of embryonic stem cell research in 2009, Nebraska Right to Life led a protest of the research outside the University of Nebraska regents' meeting.

Nati Harnik/AP

The news that U.S. scientists have successfully cloned a human embryo seems almost certain to rekindle a political fight that has raged, on and off, since the announcement of the creation of Dolly the sheep in 1997.

"The issue of legislation on human cloning is about to get hot again," says Hank Greely, director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences at Stanford Law School.

But it's a fight that has, over the past decade and a half, produced a lot of heat and light and not a lot of policy.

Human Cloning

In fact, for all the arguing about the issue that's happened in Washington over the years, human cloning is still technically legal, at least in much of the country.

"There are already 60 countries in the world that have laws on their books banning human reproductive cloning, and this prohibition is also in a number of international agreements" says Marcy Darnovsky, executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, which is devoted to the responsible use of new genetic and reproductive technologies. "But in the U.S., we have not managed to put such a law on the books at the federal level."

At least 15 states ban cloning, either for reproductive purposes or research or, in come cases, both, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

But Congress has mostly fought issues of both stem cell research and cloning to a draw.

"What we saw the last time cloning was in the headlines was that the discussion really got mired in the abortion controversy," Darnovsky said.

The House passed bills banning all forms of cloning in 2001 and 2003; the Senate failed to act in both cases.

"All the other issues got completely swamped," she said. "And I really hope that doesn't happen this time."

But both the issues of cloning ? for research and reproduction ? and embryonic stem cell research have been mired in the abortion controversy from the start.

Stem Cell Research

About the only law that has been able to pass is language that gets added to the funding bill for the Department of Health and Human Services every year since the mid-1990s ? the so-called Dickey-Wicker Amendment, named for its original House sponsors, Reps. Jay Dickey, R-Ark., and Roger Wicker, R-Miss. It bars the use of federal funds for research that could destroy or harm a human embryo.

The Clinton administration decided that federal funding of embryonic stem cell research using cell lines derived from embryos destroyed with private funds did not violate that law.

President Bush put that policy into force but severely limited the cell lines available to researchers.

"I have concluded that we should allow federal funds to be used for research on these existing stem cell lines, where the life-and-death decision has already been made," he said in a televised address to the nation.

Meanwhile, over the years Congress debated several bills to expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, under specific ethical guidelines, as well as legislation to ban cloning intended to make a baby. None, however, was able to pass both the House and Senate and get the president's signature.

When he came into office in 2009, President Obama used his executive authority to expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, while maintaining guidelines such as not paying women for their eggs.

"The majority of Americans, from across the political spectrum, and from all backgrounds and beliefs, have come to a consensus that we should pursue this research," he said.

FDA Rules

But Congress remains deadlocked over the bioethical issues ? which is not to say that there is no federal regulation.

Jonathan Moreno, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, points out that the Food and Drug Administration has, from the start, said it would closely regulate anything it deemed to be human cloning, whether reproductive or therapeutic.

"Once you start talking about putting many of the products of these cells into people, then you get into an area where the FDA is very interested," he said.

Meanwhile, Darnovsky of the Center on Genetics and Society says she hopes this new development might break the legislative logjam.

"This development, if it turns out to be replicable, will mean that there will be cloned human embryos in labs around the country," she said. "And we really need to make sure that no unscrupulous person would ever try to use those to produce a cloned human being."

Congress, however, has been unable to pass much of anything this year. It's unclear yet if this will rise to the level of must-pass.

Google's Knowledge Graph Gets Smarter, Adds Statistics And 4 New Languages

IMG_8646Amit Singhal, Google’s senior VP of search, today announced that Google’s Knowledge Graph will start exposing a number of statistics as graphs on the search results pages today. Google is also adding Polish, Turkish, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese to its lineup of supported Knowledge Graph languages. With regard to the statistics, Singhal said the system will also try to predict what your next question will be and add related statistics to the graphs. Say you want to know more about how many people live in India, Google may also show you stats for China. Singhal also recapped a number of Knowledge Graph features that expose users personal information – the kind of information Google Now would usually expose, too. These are currently available in beta and uses can sign up for it here. The Knowledge Graph, Singhal said, has enabled Google to move beyond keywords. “It allowed us to answer questions we couldn’t previously answer.” Clearly, Google has been investing heavily in this technology and the company also today announced its new voice-enabled conversational search feature that makes it even easier to find answers from the Knowledge Graph. Singhal also stressed that this is just the beginning. Google’s investment into making its search smarter is “immense,” he said. While there are still many problems to overcome, Google is clearly pursuing these new kinds of search experience (while de-emphasizing social search, it seems).

How to Create a Windows 8 Installation DVD or USB Drive

Microsoft has made upgrading to Windows 8 really easy with their upgrade tool, but if you have special needs and need a more traditional installation disc, you might not know where to look. Here's how to create one.

You may not realize this (I didn't), but the Windows 8 upgrade tool actually gives you the option to create a DVD or USB?you just have to get past the activation screen first. Here's what you do:

  1. Download the Windows 8 Installer from Microsoft's web site and run it on an existing Windows system. It doesn't actually have to be the PC you want to upgrade, even though it says so?heck, it can be a PC you've already upgraded to Windows 8.
  2. If it prompts you for a license, enter the key you received when you originally bought Windows 8.
  3. Once you've gotten past the licensing screen, it'll ask you how you want to install Windows 8. Choose "Install by Creating Media."
  4. It'll now give you a choice between a flash drive or an ISO file. If you want to create a thumb drive, choose "USB Flash Drive"?if you want to create a DVD, choose "ISO File."
  5. If you chose the ISO file, you can now burn it to a DVD with something like ImgBurn.

Note that if you create the installation media on a 32-bit PC, you'll get a 32-bit ISO, and if you create it on a 64-bit PC you'll get a 64-bit ISO (so make sure you create it on the right kind of PC). Also note that you won't be able to use this disc to do a clean install on an empty hard drive if it's an upgrade version of Windows 8, but you should be able to do a clean install over an existing copy of Windows.

Once you read the steps, the process is extremely obvious, but if you aren't aware that the option exists, you might be confused about how to burn a more traditional disc (I know I was).

American Rivers | Making Progress Means Investing In Every Drop

Matt Niemerski, Director, Western Water Policy
May?14,?2013 | Most Endangered Rivers, Water Pollution, Water Supply

Take Action to Protect the
Colorado River

Tell Congress to make a plan to restore the flows on the Colorado River!

Making progress means investing in every drop.

Kudos to the City of San Diego who seems to be ready to rise to the challenge of restoring balance to its water usage and the realities of an over stretched and dwindling supply.

The San Diego City Council approved new water purification plans intended to produce up to 40 percent of the city?s current water usage.
Public health officials and advocates also attributed the plans to an American Rivers ranking that placed the Colorado River at the top of its America's Most Endangered Rivers? list.

?Last week the Colorado River was named the most endangered river in the county, yet this is the main source of our drinking water,? San Diego Coastkeeper?s waterkeeper and Water Reliability Coalition Co-Chair Jill Witkowski said in a press release. ?It?s monumental for the city of San Diego to take this huge step toward producing our own safe drinking water to relieve our dependence on the Colorado.?

The purification plant could supply up to 88 million of the 200 million gallons of water that the city uses every day. ?

This is precisely the reason we asked supporters and people who care about the Colorado River to tell Congress to follow the Bureau of Reclamation?s recent study on with bold action and robust and effective funding levels for the Bureau of Reclamation?s WaterSmart and Title XVI Water Reclamation and Reuse programs. These programs help cities like San Diego to pursue state-of the art water conservation, optimize existing water infrastructure, maximize available water supplies, and provide healthy river flows for communities and ecosystems.

Stay classy San Diego!!!

Twitch gaming video platform comes to Xbox 360, watch and play from the same place

How does a dedicated gamer relax when they're finally beat on Call of Duty? Surely by watching others suffer the same fate, right? Well, now that just got even easier with an official Twitch app for Xbox 360. The game-centric video service finds a natural home on the console, which could go some way to augment the platform's already 34-million strong audience (or at least prevent hundreds of wasted gaming calories used when switching screens). It's not clear if there will be the option to bring your premium credentials along with you. But, we do know the app will bring access to the top 300 live Twitch channels, albeit initially only for Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Still, as a dedicated gamer, you probably already are one, right?

Kevin Berthia, California Man, Reunites With Officer 8 Years After Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Attempt

In March 2005, Kevin Berthia climbed over the railing of the Golden Gate Bridge. Desperate and distressed, the young man was ready to jump to his death.

But thanks to the compassionate intervention of a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer named Kevin Briggs, Berthia was talked off the bridge, and today, the 30-year-old is happily married with two children.

Last Wednesday, Briggs and Berthia reunited for the first time since 2005. According to the AP, the emotional reunion was part of a public service ceremony organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to honor the life-saving work of the CHP.

During the ceremony, Berthia was given the opportunity to present an award to the man who saved -- and transformed -- his life.

?It was phenomenal,? Berthia told Yahoo News of seeing Briggs again. ?I didn?t know what I was going to feel, or how I was going to react. But when I first saw him, he walked up me and I just shook his hand. It felt like I had known this man my whole life. The nerves weren?t there. It was just two old friends being reunited.?

Eight years ago, Briggs, who has been dubbed the "Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge" for the hundreds of lives he's saved, spent about an hour talking to Berthia. The young man told Briggs about his troubles and the veteran officer, who has now worked for the CHP for more than 20 years, responded in turn with kindness and hope.

"He never made me feel guilty for being in the situation I was in," Berthia, who still lives in the Bay Area, told the AP. "He made me feel like, 'I understand why you are here, but there are alternatives.' That an individual who doesn't even know me could listen to me and hear my story and show me compassion gave me another reason maybe to try again."

Though the Golden Gate Bridge is known as being one of the world's most active suicide locations, it is also a place where lives are frequently being saved. According to the AP, thousands of people have been talked out of committing suicide at Golden Gate by the CHP, U.S. Park Police and bridge security officers.

"I've never actually counted the number, but it's been numerous people," Briggs previously told Yahoo of the number of people he's saved. "Maybe two a month."

Though Briggs is unquestionably a hero, the humble officer insists that the life-saving work is a team effort.

"What I'd like to get across now is the amount of people I work with and what they go through with these efforts," he told San Rafael Patch last year. "We really do try to help the people out there. Each situation is independent of the other. I just try to get to the heart of the matter in each case, and I would expect my officers to do the same."

Need help? In the U.S., call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Deaths from West Nile virus hit record last year

(AP) ? U.S. health officials say last year was the worst ever for West Nile virus deaths.

The final tally reported Monday was 286 deaths ? or two more than the record set in 2002.

But there were far fewer illnesses overall, and fewer serious cases than in previous years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had predicted it would be a bad year because of weather conditions that promote breeding of the mosquitoes that spread the virus to people.

The CDC report Monday showed Texas had nearly a third of the serious cases, and about a third of the deaths.

West Nile virus was first diagnosed in Uganda in 1937, but no cases were reported in the U.S. until 1999 in New York. It gradually spread to the West Coast.

Family and friends celebrate Dave Brubeck's life

NEW YORK (AP) ? A celebration of Dave Brubeck's life and music turned into an ode to joy as family, friends and fans paid tribute to the groundbreaking pianist and composer who became the best known ambassador of jazz to the world.

Brubeck died Dec. 5, a day before his 92nd birthday, and a private funeral was held near his home in Wilton, Conn., shortly afterward. On Saturday afternoon, the only Brubeck family sponsored tribute took place before more than 2,000 people at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine featuring performances by Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Hilary Kole and other jazz stars.

Former President Bill Clinton, in a statement read by Brubeck's longtime manager Russell Gloyd, recalled being "utterly captivated" at age 15 after hearing Brubeck's quartet in concert and then going home to play "Take Five" until his lips gave out. "I consider myself lucky to have known Dave and to have experienced his music in such a profound way," Clinton said.

Iola Brubeck, the pianist's wife of 70 years and lyricist, opened the tribute by acknowledging the hundreds of letters she had received from people throughout the word in the five months since her husband's death.

"I noticed that one word 'joy' kept coming into those letters over and over," she said. "They expressed the deep joy his music had brought to their lives. I hope that this afternoon we can capture some of that joy."

Daughter Catherine Brubeck Yaghsizian shared warm memories of how her tired father would return home from a tour and relax by holding a jam session with his growing sons. She'd take part as a toddler by wriggling into a blue tutu her mother had given her and "twirling around trying to dance to the crazy time signatures."

Her dancing inspired her father to write "Kathy's Waltz," which ended up on his double-platinum 1959 album, "Time Out," which experimented with using odd time signatures in jazz. She then introduced her four musician brothers ? Darius (piano), Chris (electric bass), Dan (drums) and Michael (cello), who performed "Kathy's Waltz" and would appear in different configurations throughout the program.

Darius Brubeck recalled his father's 1958 State Department tour that he said "inspired a lasting interest in music from other cultures." Alto saxophonist Paul Winter and flutist Deepak Ram then performed Brubeck's "Koto Song" based on a Japanese scale, and later trumpeter Randy Brecker and saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera were the soloists on "The Golden Horn," which used a modal-like theme characteristic of Turkish music.

The most emotional moment came when bassist Eugene Wright, who turns 90 this month and is the last surviving member of the classic Brubeck quartet with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and drummer Joe Morello ? took the stage. Host Mark Ruffin of Sirius XM recalled the dignity displayed by the African-American bassist as the Brubeck quartet challenged racial segregation in the 1950s.

Wright performed a duet with Darius Brubeck on "King For A Day," a song written by Dave and Iola Brubeck for Louis Armstrong for their 1962 musical "The Real Ambassadors," which dealt with allegations of hypocrisy for the State Department using jazz musicians as symbols of democracy while the civil rights struggle was raging at home. Brubeck and Wright performed that same tune during a performance at the 1988 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow, which U.S. diplomats credited with helping break the ice at a tense moment in arms control negotiations.

The audience was also treated to a sneak preview of a recently discovered tape of Tony Bennett and Brubeck performing the standard "There Will Never Be Another You" at a 1962 White House-sponsored concert that will be released on CD this month. Bennett told the audience that on those few occasions he performed with Brubeck, "it was always spontaneous, always unexpected and never to be forgotten."

Other musical highlights included husband-and-wife pianists Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes doing a four-handed version of "The Duke," Brubeck's tribute to mentors Duke Ellington and French composer Darius Milhaud; saxophonist Marsalis tenderly performing the romantic ballad "For Iola"; and pianist Corea doing a solo version of "Strange Meadowlark," a lesser-known tune from the "Time Out" album that Corea recorded with Gary Burton on their Grammy-winning "Hot House" CD.

Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein, whose ties with Brubeck go back to 1952 when he introduced the unknown West Coast band at his Boston jazz club, closed the tribute by noting that Brubeck "had respect for everyone" and thanked Iola Brubeck for giving her husband "the support, love and strength that every great man needs."

Starting in 1955, Brubeck ended up playing the Newport festival more than any other musician, and the celebration ended with trumpeter Jon Faddis and Chris Brubeck on trombone blowing up a storm on "Blues For Newport," a tune Brubeck composed backstage at the festival.

Dot Earth Blog: More on a Sensitive Climate Question

Justin Gillis?s latest ?By Degrees? report is focused on the recent flurry of findings and discussion related to one of the most important and enduring questions in climate science: How much warming will result from a given buildup of heat-trapping greenhouse gases?

Specifically, how much will temperatures rise if the concentration of the main greenhouse gas of concern, carbon dioxide, doubles from the level of 280 parts per million that prevailed as the industrial revolution got into gear in the 19th century and was not exceeded for hundreds of thousands of years prior to that.

Please give the article a read, review related Dot Earth posts and weigh in ? constructively.

Here?s an excerpt and link:

What?s new is that several recent papers have offered best estimates for climate sensitivity that are below four degrees Fahrenheit, rather than the previous best estimate of just above five degrees, and they have also suggested that the highest estimates are pretty implausible.

Notice that these recent calculations fall well within the long-accepted range ? just on the lower end of it. But the papers have caused considerable excitement among climate-change contrarians.

It is not that they actually agree with the new numbers, mind you. They have long pushed implausibly low estimates of climate sensitivity, below two degrees Fahrenheit in some cases. But they appear to be calculating that any paper with a lowball number is a step in their direction.

James Annan, a mainstream climate scientist?working at a Japanese institute, offers a best estimate of four and a half degrees Fahrenheit. When he wrote recently that he thought some of the highest temperature projections could be rejected, skeptics could not contain their enthusiasm.

?That is what we call a landmark change of course ? by one of climatology?s most renowned warmist scientists,??declared?a blogger named Pierre L. Gosselin. ?If even Annan can see it, then the writing is truly emblazoned on the wall.?

But does this sort of claim ? that we can all breathe a sigh of relief about climate change ? really hold up?

Read the rest to find out.
