Florida Museum of Photographic Arts opens competition

Tampa, Florida-- If you are a photographer in Tampa, there is an opportunity to capture images of Tampa Bay with the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

The Museum is calling for Photographers to take pictures for a full color book, "One Day in Tampa Bay 2013". One of the images will be used for the cover.

In order to try to qualify for the opportunity, photographers have to purchase one of the badges going on sale on August 21st.

The New York Times Company Sells The Boston Globe (And Related Properties) For $70M

The New York Times is selling the Boston Globe and the rest of its New England Media Group to John Henry, the billionaire who's principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, for $70 million in cash. The news has prompted some rather depressing comments about the Globe's relative worth. For example, Ken Doctor at the Nieman Journalism Lab noted that the price is $12 million less than the five-year contract that Red Sox pitcher John Lackey signed in 2009. But harshest comparison may with the Globe of 20 years ago, which The Times acquired for $1.1 billion.

Swaddle-maker swamped after UK prince's photo-op

LONDON (AP) ? It took 45 seconds, but it was enough.

Newborn Prince George, carried from the hospital to the royal car, appeared in a cotton swaddle with the tiny birds on it. Mums-to-be around the world wanted to know: Who are you wearing?

The answer shows what it is like when a small company gets swept into the maelstrom of attention that comes from touching the golden hem of the House of Windsor.

Once the photos of the swaddle hit the Internet, style bloggers and fashion writers identified the would-be king's new clothes as being from New York-based aden + anais. Within four hours of George's appearance, the website crashed. The next day, the site crashed again. In nine days, the company had 7,000 orders ? a 600 percent increase in sales on that item.

The company never even issued a press release. Anyone who wanted to know the manufacturer simply had to type "royal swaddle" into Google, and up it came.

Raegan Moya-Jones, the chief executive of aden + anais, was about to start a meeting when a colleague brought in the picture. She couldn't believe it.

"I thought it was photo-shopped," she said.

The company is still digging out from under a pile of orders for the swaddle, part of the Jungle Jam pack of four that costs 44.95 pounds ($68).

The average daily visits to its site were off the charts: In Britain, they were up 1,960 percent; in Australia, up 892 percent; in Japan 791 percent and in the U.S., up 458 percent.

So just be prepared to wait if you want to similarly swaddle your little prince or princess. Jungle Jam is sold out for now in Britain and the United States. Desperate swaddle searchers can find them on the company's Australian site if they hurry. Shipping fees are extra.

And there's a factory run from China of 10,000. So hold on.

People just want to be a part of things says Cele Otnes, a professor of marketing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and co-author of the upcoming book "Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture." She said the rush to buy whatever the royals wear gives admirers a chance to participate in a big, happy event.

"This is history," she said. "If you can't be there, if you can't have a royal baby yourself, you can buy the swaddle."

The royals do grant warrants ? a mark of recognition of those who supply goods or services to the Royal Household. Fortnum & Mason has one for example, for being a "Grocer & Provision Merchant" to the monarch. But there are no royal adverts.

Nonetheless the royals remain marketing gold.

They have always been trendsetters. Even Queen Victoria once promoted a ball to help the Spitalfields silk industry, Otnes said. More recently, Princess Diana's every ruffled collar or bow-lined stocking could set off the cash registers.

But Prince George is the first heir to the throne born in the Internet age. New mums and dads can see what Kate and Wills and ? now baby George ? are wearing and buy it instantly.

This goes way beyond commemorative china, tea towels and other trinkets ? the traditional sort of souvenir that shoppers can pick up at the Buckingham Palace gift store.

There's even a name for it: the Kate Effect. It started with the sapphire blue wrap dress designed by Daniella Helayel that the then-Kate Middleton wore to announce her engagement ? and just kept going. Take the white dress Kate wore in the couple's engagement photo ? sold by UK retailer Reiss ? or Topshop's black dress with a Peter Pan collar that she wore for a video appeal.

Fashionistas follow Kate's every move. Every blouse, shoe, and bag the future queen of England wears is fodder for style bloggers and a money-spinner for retailers.

She's been democratic about it ? choosing stuff that is accessible to the average person and supporting British products in a big way.

And now there's George, who isn't even wearing clothes yet but has managed to get blankets out the door. And it isn't just the ones from aden + anais. Little George first appeared in a white crocheted blanket from G.H. Hurt & Son of Nottingham, England. They are swamped with orders, too, after photographers zeroed in on the firm's label, blew it up and posted it on the net.

And yet, this is just the start. Otnes said that the trend will just continue as George gets older. Get ready for the booties, the scooter, the sun hat. Firms can get overwhelmed by the attention, which comes fast, hot and for a limited time only.

"You had better hold on," Otnes advised companies in the limelight. "And put on another shift."

Moya-Jones, a native of Australia who started in the swaddle business because she couldn't find what she wanted in stores, didn't anticipate the royal wave. Even though aden + anais have wrapped the babies of celebs like Beyonce, the spotlight that turned on her company with Prince George was altogether different.

After all, her privately held company isn't huge ? founded seven years ago, it has 65 full-time employees and about as many part-time staff. In addition to swaddles, aden + anais makes sleeping bags, bibs, blankets and sheets, and Moya-Jones doesn't want to put so much emphasis on Jungle Jam swaddles that customers who want other products feel they are being ignored.

And then there's the shock factor ? even if it was a happy shock. The company didn't send the royals their product and expect them to use it. That's just not done.

Moya-Jones only learned after she saw pictures that Kate reportedly picked out the muslin swaddle personally at a London store.

"That's the nicest thing," she said. "At the end of the day, the duchess is a first-time mum, like all of us once were."

Who are you? Well, on Sunday, the BBC (and BBC America in the U.S.) let adoring fans of the 50-year-old series "Doctor Who" in on who will play the next incarnation of the traveling Time Lord: Peter Capaldi.

Capaldi will play the 900-plus-year-old 12th Doctor and takes over the role from Matt Smith in an episode that will air on Nov. 23 in the UK.?

"Doctor Who belongs to all of us," said Capaldi after the announcement.

Scottish actor?Capaldi?appeared in both the feature film "In the Loop" and TV series "The Thick of It" as a foul-mouthed political advisor, and was highly touted to be the next in the role. (Curiously, he most recently appeared in "World War Z" as a character called the "W.H.O. Doctor" ? in that case, the World Health Organization medical expert.)

He appeared once in a "Doctor Who" episode, "The Fires of Pompeii," in 2008.

The announcement was made in a live TV show during a special 30-minute program, which played in prime time in the UK and in the afternoon in America, and was filmed before a 400-member studio audience. Also making appearances on stage and in pre-taped interviews were former Doctor Who actors and former traveling companions.?

"Veep" and "Thick of It" writer/producer/director Armando Iannucci immediately tweeted his delight:

The character of the alien Gallifreian only known as "The Doctor" can "regenerate" his form, which helps explain how, for example, David Tennant transformed into Matt Smith in 2010; Capaldi will next regenerate from Smith.

There had been some discussion about whether the doctor should change gender (he's always been male) or race (he's always been white), but that apparently that was not to happen.

The choice of Capaldi is interesting in that both Smith and Tennant have established a trend of younger doctors; earlier on the Doctors tended to be played by actors in their 40s or older. Capaldi is 55.

"Doctor Who" first premiered in 1963 in the UK and ran until 1996; it was shown in the U.S. in syndication over the years, and garnered a cult of fans. But ever since the show was rebooted in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the role, its appeal has reached new heights in the U.S.

Less Nuclear Energy Means More Coal, Natural Gas -- And Carbon Emissions

Seems like the whole world is wrestling with what to do about nuclear energy. And while such countries as the United States, Japan and Germany grapple with those dilemmas, they are simultaneously discovering that using less nuclear power may mean increasing their use of fossil fuels.

Resolving global energy questions in no way involves a cookie-cutter approach. Indeed, each nation has its own set of goals and constraints in which it must mix and match an optimal array of fuels to power their economies. With that, nuclear power had risen from the ashes at some point in the early 2000s, all as a proven, viable method of delivering mostly carbon-free electricity to the masses. Since then, though, it has taken some blows while unconventional natural gas has become the new golden boy, at least in some circles.

For three-plus decades, nuclear plants had become reliable and efficient, running at 90-plus percent capacity rates ? more than any other form of electric generation. To top it off, no major accidents had occurred here, or elsewhere. Then Fukushima happened. And that caused the world community to pause and to re-examine its nuclear energy options.

The United States is soul-searching, again. Three relatively high-profile closures have taken place: Southern California Edison Edison?s San Onofre Generation Station in Southern California, Duke Energy Duke Energy?s Crystal River in Florida, Dominion Resources Dominion Resources? Kewaunee plant in Wisconsin. The first two were caused by ongoing maintenance issues while the latter was caused by low natural gas prices.

In the case of Southern California Edison, the two mothballed reactors had provided 17 percent of the region?s electricity. That power will largely be replaced using fossil fuels, namely imported natural gas. As a result, the Breakthrough Institute is pointing out that the state?s carbon emissions will rise by at least 8 million metric tons a year.

Meanwhile, an analysis written by the Institute for Energy and the Environment at Vermont Law School, says that nuclear energy is unable to compete in a low-cost natural gas environment. And while President Obama?s climate policies would tend to favor low-to-no-carbon fuels such as nuclear power, it will be a decade before those laws would kick in. Until then, those nuclear plants won?t be competitive.

Beside the current closures or ?up-rate? cancelations, of which there are nine, there remains 38 reactors in 23 states that are at risk of early retirements, with 12 of those facing the greatest risk of being shutdown, the paper adds. Up-rates are the increasing of a plant?s current output ? a phenomenon that has been put on hold because of current cheap natural gas prices.

That same study says that Exelon?s Clinton unit in Illinois and Entergy?s Indian Point in New York may also go. Both companies have seen their stock prices suffer as a result of the present dynamics. TVA?s Browns Ferry in Alabama, FirstEnergy?s Davis-Besse in Ohio and Constellation Energy Group?s Nine Mile Point in New York are also listed as being at risk of early retirement.

?Nuclear reactors are simply not competitive,? says author Mark Cooper. ?They have never been competitive at the beginning of their life cycle, when the build/cancel decision is made, and they are not competitive at the end of their life cycles, when the repair/retire decision is made.?

Critics of Cooper, such as Rod Adams, publisher of Atomic Insights, point out that Cooper holds a doctorate in sociology while billing himself as an ?economic analyst.? He adds that Cooper is more interested in getting rid of nuclear energy than in limiting carbon emissions.

If any nation would be timid of nuclear energy, it would Japan. In May 2012, Japan turned off the last of its 54 nuclear reactors. Since then, it has re-started two units. But it has had to rely on imported natural gas to meet much of its electricity needs. Meanwhile, it has been able to employee energy efficiency methods resulting declines in consumption while also building solar units. Still, it?s energy costs have escalated, with consumers paying an estimate 12 percent more in electric bills.

Proponents of restarting some of the nuclear facilities are emphasizing that the country cannot replace 30 percent of its electric power generation overnight. They add that all of the Japan?s nuclear reactors are going through rigorous new stress tests to try and ensure that they could survive massive natural events.

To that end, France?s Areva has said that Japan would re-start six reactors by year-end. Many of the rest could get a second-life soon after, especially because Prime Minister Shinzo Abe?s party has gained control of the upper house there. Abe has said those nuclear units that exceed the nation?s new stress testing could re-start within a year of those evaluations.

While such a position is contrary to how most Japanese feel, the country has now set up an independent nuclear regulator that would have powers unlike those ever granted to its predecessor ? ones that could assure integrity of the regulatory system.

Specifically, the so-called Nuclear Regulatory Authority has publicly stated its goals to incorporate the highest safety standards in the world, which include active measures to counter natural disasters. The aim is win the public?s trust and to create the ?peaceful? development of nuclear power. By contrast, the agency that had overseen monitoring efforts was accused of being too cozy with industry, allowing senior government officials to get high-level jobs with Tokyo Electric Power Co. right after they had done their oversight stints.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory is on a trip to Gifu, Cincinnati?s sister city in Japan.

City officials from Gifu asked Mallory to visit to talk about what Cincinnati has done and is doing to keep from staying ?quiet,? said Steve Rindsberg, chairman of the Gifu Sister City Committee. He will be touring various businesses and government departments to give speeches.

?In some respects, Gifu has some of the same problems we do,? Rindsberg said. ?People are moving out to suburban communities. There was once a thriving downtown area, and it?s gotten kind of quiet. They?re seeing good things [in Cincinnati] and they want to see what they can do.?

Mallory left Sunday and returns Monday. ?Gifu and Cincinnati are splitting the cost of the trip.

Listed in his itinerary are designated snack times and quantities for small gifts to give at each location.

It is the 25th anniversary of Cincinnati?s union with Gifu as sister cities.

There are plenty of tools and software packages out there that will monitor your Android phone and help locate it in the event that it's lost, but until now we've not heard of any official solution from Google themselves. That's about to change according to the official Android blog, as the Android Device Manager is set to launch later this month.

Built for devices running Android 2.2 or above (that'd be about all of them) Android Device Manager is said to have tools to help you locate a missing phone by sounding the ringer at max volume, tracking its location if it's out of earshot, and a quick and easy way to remotely wipe your personal data off the device if you're not able to recover it.

Many of us have been using some of the great third party tools for this for a while now, but we're still excited to see an official offering. We'll have a good look when it becomes official.

Apple hiring Maps experts, iOS 7 will recruit users to 'Help Improve Maps' with Frequent Locations

While Apple is actively recruiting for scores of new full time jobs related to Maps, it also plans to enlist the support of its installed base of 400 million iOS users with an opt-in invitation to "Help Improve Maps" in iOS 7.


Part of the initial setup of iOS 7 includes an option to "Help Improve Maps," which as Apple explains, ties into Frequent Locations, a new feature of iOS 7.

Frequent Locations remembers places you've been, similar to the the bookmarks history of your web browser, is are presented next to Maps Bookmarks and locations attached to Contacts (below left).

Users who choose to activate both features will have their Frequent Locations linked to their iCloud / Apple ID account so the system can automatically calculate driving (or walking) directions to locations as users select them in Maps (below right, directions to Mavericks).

Apple also benefits from anonymously storing coordinate information because it helps the company verify how accurate its driving time estimates are, by comparing them to the actual time it takes users to arrive.

The release of OS X Mavericks, which brings Apple's Maps to the Mac, will also include new tools for facilitate end users reporting of errors.

So far this year, Apple has also acquired indoor mapping service WiFiSLAM, crowdsourced mapping data startup Locationary and transit app HopStop, all apparently aimed at improving its mapping services.

Apple hiring dozens of full time mapping experts in the field

Apple's Jobs website currently returns dozens of open positions related to Maps. Among these are a series of Maps Ground Truth Local Experts, in listings that state that "the Maps team is looking for people with a passion for mapping, great testing skills, and deep regional knowledge to help us build better and better maps.

"In this position, you will be responsible for the quality assessment of Apple Maps for your region, including both data and map services. You will monitor changes to our maps, provide?feedback on unique local map requirements, collect ground truth information, and evaluate competing products."

Apple currently lists openings for ground truth local experts in Washington D.C., Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles in the U.S., as well as European positions in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Istanbul, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stockholm, the U.K. and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, India, Australia and Southeast Asia, China, and specific Asian cities that include Beijing, Hong Kong, Sapporo, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo and Osaka.

Additional openings for map experts at Apple HQ

The company also lists a series of open positions based in or around Apple's Cupertino headquarters, ranging from scientists to pour through its reams of geodata to QA staff to find bugs and a variety of specialized engineers to develop new features. These include:

Maps Bug Triage Engineer: "Maps problems are challenging to triage and debug. When a business is in the wrong location on the map, the issue could be anything from the address being wrong in our data to the conversion of the address to a latitude and longitude not working properly. We're looking for engineers to help triage internal problem reports, reproduce problems, and help us learn how to diagnose and triage problems better"

Maps Services QA Manager: "To test Maps well, we need to understand how the world is reflected in code and data, and also how to build great QA systems. Some tests can only be done manually, while other areas can only be covered adequately through large-scale automation."

Maps Process QA Engineer: "Maps is an interconnected series of services that each have their own teams working to create the best user experience possible. It can be challenging to understand all the working pieces let alone understand their QA needs. We?re looking for individuals who can help bridge the gap and document the unique QA requirements needed for each service."

Maps Process QA Analyst: "In this role you'll work directly with Process QA Engineers and you'll learn something about how every part of Maps works. You?ll be testing and documenting the QA processes involved in qualifying every component. Also, when you try something that doesn?t work you get no feedback or suggestion: it just doesn?t work. You can think you have the right tool, so perhaps you aren?t hitting the right area or something. There is no way to know. These inconsistencies thread throughout the game, making it too often a confusing experience that has you questioning whether it is you or the game that is the cause of getting stuck.

Another point of confusion is the lack of distinction between single-use and multi-use items. In many hidden object games an item is gone when you use it ? sometimes it makes sense (like a plant used in a potion), other times not (scissors). I have gotten used to this in more recent games, but in Alchemy Mysteries I got stumped until I realized that one piece of paper held multiple clues ? and I came across it by pure luck while perusing the journal for other things!

The 3D panning view is a great addition, as it the explorable world. The way the developers laid things out and implemented the movement system makes it feel more like a traditional adventure game. Even though you are simply sliding from place to place, the impression is more immersive.
