Chrome for Apple?s iPhone, iPad

Google?s Chrome browser to be available on Apple?s iPad, iPhone

SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (Reuters) - Chrome, Google Inc?s GOOG.O Internet browser, will be made available on the iPhone and iPad, two hot devices manufactured by Google?s fierce rival Apple Inc.

The development, announced on Thursday at Google?s I/O developer conference in San Francisco, could further expand the reach of Chrome in the intensely fought browser wars. Launched in 2008, Google?s browser overtook Microsoft?s MSFT.O Internet Explorer in May as the world?s most popular, according to analytics company StatCounter.

Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai confirmed Chrome?s pole position during his remarks onstage, saying that Google data showed the browser now has 310 million ?active? users. Chrome will begin appearing in Apple?s App Store later on Thursday, Pichai said.

Apple in recent months has sought to lessen its dependency on Google?s Web services within its products, heightening the competition between the two tech companies. Earlier this month, the phone and tablet manufacturer said it would load its own home-built mapping service in next version of mobile OS instead of Google Maps.

Earlier this week, Google announced its own tablet, the Nexus 7, which will ship with Chrome as its default browser.

The app, still slated for a broad 2012 release, will be available as a free download for US subscribers via the Google Play store. The list of features includes Start Now, which lets users listen to programming from up to five hours prior, pausing / fast forwarding / rewinding and Tune Start, which brings up the beginning of an already played song. Also on-board is the Show Finder, a program guide that lets subscribers set show alerts. The company will be demoing the product later this evening at I/O. In the meantime, check out the press release after the break.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Poor Diets Blamed For Childhood ...

June 28th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Register Herald?..

The battle of the bulge among West Virginia children isn?t going to be won until society is weaned off fast, processed foods and physical activity is revived.

So concluded three southern lawmakers Wednesday, after the Standing Committee on Education adopted a startling report on obese children in our state.

In her findings a day earlier to a legislative panel, Dr. Eloise Elliott, a West Virginia University professor, found that 27.5 percent of West Virginia children are considered obese, contrasted to a national average of 17 percent.

Her study revealed that a staggering 47.1 percent of 5th graders are deemed to be either overweight or obese.

Delegates Dave Perry, D-Fayette, Linda Sumner, R-Raleigh, and Rick Moye, D-Raleigh, say the weighty matter is attributable to ?a societal issue.?

?That means we all have to share in the responsibility for it,? Perry said.

A major problem is that the education system has decreased its emphasis on physical education, said Perry, a retired principal of Collins Middle School in Oak Hill.

One fault lies in abandoning the old system in which men taught boys and women instructed girls in physical education, he said.

Stocks slump amid worries over Europe

By Patrick Rizzo

Concerns about the European debt crisis slammed stocks Monday, shaving at least 1 percent off the major indexes.

Just after midday the Dow Jones industrial average was down 1.2 percent, while the broader S&P 500 shed 1.7 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 1.9 percent.

Europe's crisis, and especially worries about Spanish banks, held investors in thrall again. Spain officially asked the European Union for help to shore up its banks, which have been hit hard by rising bad loans caused by a slumping real estate market. There was very little detail about how much aid Spain would be requesting, and the uncertainty raised concerns among investors. ?

The news from Spain comes days before European Union officials are set to meet to discuss how to staunch the debt crisis in Europe that threatens to push the continent back into recession and perhaps stifle growth in the U.S., China and other parts of the world. Investors are concerned that EU officials will not be able to come up with a deal to restore confidence in the 17-nation eurozone's ability to manage its finances.

Besides Spanish banks, the EU summit Thursday and Friday was also set to look at Greece's problems and discuss the tough austerity package imposed on it as a condition for economic aid. But those planned?discussions were dealt a setback with news that both Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and incoming Finance Minister Vassilis Rapanos would miss the summit due to health problems. Rapanost resigned after being hospitalized for several days, before he could be sworn in, after complaining about dizziness and abdominal pains.

In U.S. markets, U.S. bank stocks felt the brunt of the rising anxiety?as investors fled them amid worries about their exposure to European banks.

"When the dollar rallies, almost everything else goes down," says Art Cashin, UBS, discussing growing concerns of a global slowdown, as investors take flight to safety.

Triumphant Islamist vows to be leader for all Egyptians

The Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi pledged to be a leader for all Egyptians after being crowned successor to ousted strongman Hosni Mubarak in a triumph for the long-repressed Islamist movement.

Official results announced on Sunday gave Morsi victory over Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq with 51.73 percent of the vote, sparking joyous scenes in Cairo's Tahrir Square, epicentre of last year's Arab Spring uprising.

But the celebrations were dampened by a series of moves by the interim military junta that took over on Mubarak's overthrow in February last year to weaken the powers of the new civilian head of state.

US President Barack Obama telephoned Morsi to congratulate him on his poll win but newspapers in Israel expressed concern about the rise to power of an Islamist in the Jewish state's most important Arab treaty partner.

"I will be a president for all Egyptians," Morsi said just hours after he was declared the winner.

"I call on you, great people of Egypt... to strengthen our national unity," he added. National unity "is the only way out of these difficult times."

Morsi, who resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood to take the top job, also thanked the "martyrs" of the 18-day popular uprising that forced Mubarak from power. "The revolution continues," he said.

The 60-year-old engineer vowed to honour international treaties, adding: "We come in peace."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying the Jewish state "respects the results," but Israeli media expressed concern about the Islamist victory.

"Israel hopes to continue cooperation with the Egyptian government on the basis of the peace treaty," the statement from Netanyahu's office said.

But writing in top-selling Yediot Aharonot newspaper, analyst Alex Fishman said: "Israel should be prepared for every eventuality," evoking the possibility of "an Islamist intelligence minister, a re-examination of the peace accords, a collapse of the economic agreements and lack of security coordination."

The right-wing Maariv newspaper echoed those concerns. "The fear has become reality, the Muslim Brotherhood are in power in Egypt," the paper said.

Morsi's election victory came after 18 months of a tumultuous military-led transition from Mubarak's rule, marked by political upheaval and bloodshed.

"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," said the announcement from the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan on Sunday.

Hundreds of thousands of Morsi supporters erupted in celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the symbolic heart of the uprising that brought down the Mubarak regime in February 2011.

Cheering Egyptians waved flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during last year's uprising.

"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted, as fireworks went off over the square.

Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.

Losing candidate Shafiq, who was widely perceived as the military's candidate, joined the country's military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi in congratulating Morsi, the official MENA news agency reported.

The interim head of the Coptic Church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon called on him to build strong, independent institutions and develop democracy. and the European Union called on him to reach out to all political and social groups.

Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes to Shafiq's 12,347,380, said Sultan, announcing the official results.

Shafiq supporters, who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo, were devastated by the result.

Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.

The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.

Extra troops and police were deployed and military helicopters flew overhead.

The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around state institutions as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.

The election had polarised the nation.

While some feared a return to the old regime if Shafiq won, others wanted to keep religion out of politics, fearing that the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedom.

President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified from running.

During his campaign he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and Egypt's sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.

Through Mubarak's three-decade rule, the Brotherhood was outlawed and its leaders often detained, forcing it to field those candidates it did run for office as independents.

But the dispute between the Brotherhood and the military remains unresolved.

The Brotherhood has rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that dissolved the Islamist-led parliament elected in a multi-phase vote through the turn of the year and gave the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution.

The move effectively strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since Mubarak's overthrow.

It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest that were strongly criticised by human rights watchdogs.

Gabrial The Great favourite to win King George V Stakes | bettor.com

Gabrial The Great favourite to win King George V Stakes

Gabrial The Great has a solid chance of winning the King George V Stakes (Handicap) at Ascot in England on Thursday, June 21, 2012. A cash prize of ?34,238 will be given to the winner of the class-2 event.

Stamina will play an important part in determining winner of the 1 mile 4 furlong race, which is scheduled to start at 17:35 GMT. Furthermore, the going will be good to soft and a total of 19 runners will be seen in action.

Following are the entries confirmed for the event: Anomaly, Nicholascopernicus, Gabrial The Great, Fennell Bay, Moldowney, Pilgrims Rest, Uriah Heep, Handsome Man, Misdemeanour, Niceofyoutotellme, Open Water, Samba King, Sparkling Portrait, Commitment, Ghost Protocol, Prussian, Rocktherunway and Rougemont.

Cameron Highland was also scheduled to take part in the race, but his name has been withdrawn now, as the track conditions do not suit his running style. The three-year-old colt would have attracted quite a few bets in his favour, as his record is very good.

However, the current circumstances suggest that Gabrial The Great will be a top contender for victory at Ascot. He will definitely like the softer ground, as he has done well in such conditions in the past as well. This is why the bookies have given him pretty decent odds and the punters will also be eager to risk a lot of bets on him.

The three-year-old colt has participated in three races, winning one of them whereas secured the runner up spot on the same number of times. He was unable to deliver a solid result on his debut, but improved his performances afterwards.

The Michael Bell?s trainee did a decent job in his most recent outing, as he finished runner up in it. This was a class-3 event, thus he will have to be at his best in order to take the top spot today.

Gabrial The Great will be partnered by Franny Norton, who has won a lot of races in his career. However, he is not known to be a consistent runner, which is why his strike rate is on the lower side.

The bookies have given the best odds to Nicholascopernicus, who will be chasing a hat-trick of victories today. He will definitely give a tough time to Gabrial The Great.

Investing in Graphene Stock: How to Get in on this "Miracle Material ...

  • Graphene is one of the strongest materials ever created, 200 times stronger than steel and even more durable than diamonds. According to researchers quoted by BBC News, "It would take an elephant balanced on a pencil to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of Saran Wrap."
  • It's highly flexible and can be stretched like rubber without losing its strength.
  • It's the thinnest physical material in the world - 3 million sheets of graphene stacked atop one another would be just 1 millimeter thick. It also weighs virtually nothing.
  • It conducts both heat and electricity better than copper, and could eventually replace silicon in circuitry, potentially changing the nature of every electronic device in use today. Imagine cell phones the size of a strand of wire or big-screen high-definition televisions no thicker than wall paper - and capable of being rolled up into a one-inch tube and moved anywhere.
  • It's incredibly energy efficient and a potentially eco-friendly source of power. MIT researchers recently found they could generate electric current by shining light on graphene, meaning it could be used to revolutionize solar-power collection. A separate study at Northwestern University found graphene could be used to charge lithium-ion batteries - like those used in electric vehicles - 10 times faster and give them 10 times the storage capacity of present models.
It's no wonder then that governments, universities, energy companies and major corporations are pouring huge dollar amounts into graphene research and product development.

For example, Great Britain just dedicated $120 million to further graphene work at the University of Manchester; South Korea has announced $300 million in graphene projects; and the U.S. military is studying potential applications in aircraft, missiles and other high-speed, light-weight equipment.

On the corporate front, an estimated 200 companies - from IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) to international players like Korea's Samsung Corp. and Nokia Corp. (NYSE ADR: NOK) - are working on graphene research and applications.

IBM has already demonstrated a 150 gigahertz (GHz) transistor made of graphene, nearly quadrupling the 40 GHz top speed of the fastest silicon-based device.

Investing in Graphene Stock

By now, you should be chomping at the bit for ways in which to invest in this "miracle material."

As far as retail investors are concerned, currently graphene is a limited market.

First, there's no way to invest in graphene - or the graphite carbon it's made from - as a commodity.

China controls roughly 70% of the market, much as it dominates more than 95% of the world's "rare earths" market, and Beijing is both limiting exports and charging a 20% export duty on graphene. That's one reason its price has more than tripled in the past five years.

For investors who can't wait to get a hold of a graphene stock, the only publicly traded Western alternative would be the Northern Graphite Corp. (CVE: NGC). Its shares are listed on the Canadian Venture Exchange, recent price of $1.71.

NGC mines large-flake graphite from its Bissett Creek site in Northern Ontario, and has used it to successfully produce graphene - which, though larger and slightly heavier, reportedly has higher electrical conductivity, lower resistance and greater transparency than graphene made from Chinese powder or flake graphite.

Given its low price - its 52-week range has been $0.71 to $3.42 - Northern Graphite obviously offers potential, but the company hasn't shown a profit at any time over the past five years and trading volume on the CVE is thin, with notoriously large bid-ask spreads. NGC is ultra-speculative.

As of now, there's no real pure play in graphene research, development or manufacturing, either - but there is something close.

A graphene stock in the manufacturing field is CVD Equipment Corp. (Nasdaq: CVV), recent price $13.12. Partnered with Columbia University's Graphene Labs Inc., CVV manufactures and markets graphene products online via a Website called graphene-supermarket.com.

Unlike NGC, CVD Equipment has shown rising revenue ($30.99 million in 2011) and profits over the past five years, with earnings per share jumping from 11 cents in 2010 to 67 cents in 2011. The company earned 12 cents on revenue of $7.15 million in the first quarter of 2012. Unfortunately, trading volume in CVV shares is also thin - just 71,000 per day - and the stock has already risen from just $3.01 a share in mid-2010, though it is well off its 52-week high of $19.76.

Investing in graphene stock is difficult in that nearly all of the other graphene-related companies are privately held. That includes Michigan-based XG Sciences Inc., one of the largest U.S. graphene suppliers, selling "nanoplatelets" and developing specialized graphene products using them.

However, you can make an indirect investment in XG through POSCO (ADR NYSE: PKX), recent price $82.84, which purchased a 20% share in the company last June.

Obviously, graphene offers remarkable possibilities. It also offers substantial profits for investors, but finding the right vehicle to catch the graphene wave will be a challenge - requiring both patience and close monitoring of companies that may benefit most as the new technologies evolve.

Tests show students struggle to explain answers

American children do much better identifying the correct answers to simple scientific tasks than using evidence from their experiments to explain those answers.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, often called the Nation's Report Card, asked students in grades four, eight and 12 to perform actual experiments to apply principles they learn in the classroom on a practical level. The results of the 2009 tests were released Tuesday.

"That tells us that our science teaching isn't getting us as far as we need to go," said Chris Dede, professor from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Katherine Carroll, an 11th- and 12th-grade chemistry teacher in Waterboro, Maine, said even her best students struggle to explain their conclusions in the lab reports they turn in for her class. She found them more accustomed to questions with one right answer.

"Teachers have moved towards teaching more knowledge, as opposed to the understanding behind that knowledge," Carroll said.

Like Carroll, Dede said kids' difficulty explaining is old news to most teachers and parents, but this is the first time they have concrete evidence demonstrating the problem.

"Having something that is more than just anecdotes, that is rigorous research across a wide range of students, is very helpful, because it's a better form of evidence on which to make decisions," Dede said.

The first test, called Hands On Tasks (HOTs), allotted students 40 minutes to conduct experiments with physical objects. This allowed for a richer analysis of their understanding of the subject than pencil and paper tests can provide, according to Alan Friedman, chairman of the National Assessment Governing Board's Assessment Development Committee.

HOTs, however, are nothing new. NAEP tests used them as far back as 1996.

Friedman said the second type of test, Interactive Computer Tasks (ICTs), went beyond what had previously been measured, testing how students ran their own experiments in simulated natural or laboratory environments with the ability to go back, adjust variables and correct their mistakes on a computer.

"This is a set of skills which in the real world is invaluable," Friedman said, "and which before this we'd never been able to know if students could do this or not."

Though Friedman said the computer tests are "dramatically more expensive" to design, traditional assessments cannot measure these same skills.

During ICTs, just over a quarter of high school seniors could both select and explain their correct answers about heating and cooling. Double that amount - 54 percent - in the eighth grade group could support correct conclusions with evidence, but only 15 percent of fourth grade students could do the same in their experiment.

The computer tasks eliminated limits of geography and time, so students could virtually see, for example, how a plant given a certain amount of sunlight would grow without waiting days or weeks to see the actual process.

Though the tests raised significant questions about students' abilities to apply scientific knowledge to the real world, they at least seemed to enjoy taking them, according to Peggy Carr, associate commissioner at the National Center for Education Statistics.

Carr usually observes students losing interest in the traditional NAEP tests. "Not so with these assessments," Carr said.

In the hands on tasks, female students in every grade outdid their male counterparts by 2 to 4 percentage points, on average. Girls also scored slightly better than male students in grades eight and 12 on interactive computer tasks.

This gender gap shows a reversal from the traditional NAEP tests in which eighth-grade boys scored at least four points higher on average than their female peers in 2009 and 2011

White and Asian-Pacific Islander students outperformed black and Hispanic students in the hands on tasks, and Asian/Pacific Islander students achieved higher scores on average than other students in all grades' computerized assessments.

The lowest scoring group in both assessments was 12th grade black students. They answered 19 percent of computerized questions correctly, whereas their Asian-Pacific Islander counterparts passed 33 percent.

(AP) ? International Olympic officials have opened a high-level investigation into allegations that authorized representatives in more than 50 countries ? including a national Olympic committee ? were involved in selling London Olympics tickets on the black market for profit.

The International Olympic Committee convened an emergency session Saturday to discuss a dossier of evidence presented to it by Britain's Sunday Times. The newspaper published an investigation Sunday claiming that officials have been offering tickets for the July 27-Aug. 12 London games, including highly sought-after events such as the men's 100-meter final, at vastly inflated prices.

One of the most damaging allegations was against Spyros Capralos, the Greek Olympic Committee president and top organizer for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

He was quoted as saying he had "pulled strings" with London organizing chairman Sebastian Coe to obtain an extra batch of premium tickets for official agents in Greece, on the pretext that demand in his country had outstripped expectations.

The paper said Capralos acknowledged in talks with its undercover reporters that demand had actually been very low and that many of the tickets were subsequently sold to people outside Greece for profit.

The London organizing committee said Capralos' alleged boasts of discussions with Coe were untrue. Coe had told the Greek Olympic Committee that tickets were allocated in accordance with IOC ticketing policies, it said.

"There was no further contact ? either formal or informal ? on this subject," it said in a statement.

Capralos was not immediately available for comment. A Greek Olympic Committee official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, denied that anything untoward had taken place.

At issue are ticket allocations given to each of the 205 national Olympic committees to sell in their home countries. The committees appoint an organization within their countries to sell the tickets, a process meant to ensure equity.

IOC rules forbid national committees from selling tickets abroad, inflating ticket prices or selling tickets to unauthorized resellers.

But the Sunday Times said its undercover reporters, who posed as illegal ticket-sellers acting for clients in the Middle East, caught officials red-handed. It said it has presented the IOC with a dossier of evidence on 27 officials controlling the tickets for 54 countries.

The paper even posted on its website videos of its reporters' negotiations with Capralos and some of the agents. They include official ticket agents in Serbia, Lithuania and China, who offered to sell the undercover reporters premium tickets for up to 6,000 British pounds ($9,407) each.

Official ticket prices for the games range from 20.12 pounds to 2,012 pounds.

One of those accused of falling for the newspaper's ruse was former Olympic swimmer Yoav Bruck, who is authorized to sell tickets in Israel and Cyprus. He denied allegations that he offered the Sunday Times reporters the best seats to the 100 final.

"The report is swamped with untruths, lies and inventions that cries to the heavens," he told Israel's Channel 2 TV. "I am saying that we are clean ... we are not selling anything we are not allowed to."

The report also alleged that Greg Harney, an executive at travel company Cartan Tours and a former top official at the U.S. Olympic Committee, told the undercover reporters how to conceal an illegal ticket sale.

The IOC said in a statement on its website that it "takes these allegations very seriously and has immediately taken the first steps to investigate."

The report was the latest in a string of similar allegations. In May, a top Ukrainian Olympic official resigned following allegations that he offered to sell thousands of dollars' worth of tickets for the London Games on the black market.

Volodymyr Gerashchenko, secretary general of Ukraine's national Olympic committee, was accused in a BBC television report of telling an undercover reporter posing as an unauthorized dealer that he was willing to sell up to 100 tickets for cash.

Ticketing problems have plagued London's organizers for months, with many people in Britain complaining about the official website's intractable computer problems and its inability to cope with huge demand.

Many Britons have been frustrated that they couldn't attend an event that is costing the nation 9.3 billion pounds ($14.6 billion) to host, and ticketing problems have prompted some London officials to demand more transparency on how the tickets were allocated.

Organizers had promised a full accounting once the games are done, but members of the London Assembly, a public watchdog group, have been demanding an accounting of how many tickets have been sold so far and at what price. Critics of the London organizers believe a disproportionate number of tickets have been sold in higher price brackets.

The issue is now in the hands of the IOC ethics commission, which investigates and makes recommendations to the ruling executive board. The IOC has asked the British newspaper to supply all the evidence from its undercover probe.

The IOC is not expected to complete its full investigation until after the London Olympics, but the committee could provisionally take action against certain individuals before the games. Officials could be suspended and barred from attending the Olympics, sanctions which the IOC has taken in previous ethics cases.

In addition, the IOC is considering suspending the ticket sales process for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, until the current investigation is completed, a senior IOC official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Romney Insurance Plan Basically Involves Heaping More Money on ...

Romney admits Obama is eloquent, but claims voters will vote on his record

Mitt Romney?s insurance stance is basically anti-Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, but that doesn?t mean the presumptive GOP candidate is actually able to answer any questions about what he will do about the growing cost of health care were he elected to office.

Romney confirmed his health insurance company favoring views this week at a campaign stop in Orlando, where he told a group of supporters that ?regardless of what they do, it?s going to be up to the next President to either repeal and replace Obamacare or to replace Obamacare.?

Romney?s insurance position on pre-existing conditions also has not?wavered. While President Obama?s plan solves the problem of pre-existing condition denials, Romney?s insurance stance firmly ignores the fact that in a time of record unemployment, many ill Americans have been unable to maintain a steady job and thus, steady health insurance.

Back in March, Romney went on Jay Leno?s show, and the issue of health insurance and pre-existing conditions arose. Romney hedged, unwilling to specifically acknowledge that a large swath of Americans uncovered after job losses would, in his plan, be urged to ?die quickly.?

The Republican candidate tried to make it look like he was for?not excluding people, attempting to mask his position:

??people who have been continuously insured, let?s say someone?s had a job for a while but insured, then they get real sick and they happen to lose a job, or change jobs, they find, gosh, I?ve got a pre-existing condition, I can?t get insured. I?d say, no, no no. As long as you?ve been continuously insured, you ought to be able to get insurance going forward. ?See, you have to take that problem away. You have to make sure the legislation doesn?t allow insurance companies to reject people.?

Mitt Romney Taxes Too Low

Leno asks about people who have lost their jobs or were never offered health insurance in the first place, and Romney hedges:

?Well, people with pre-existing as long as they?d been insured before, they?re going to be able to continue to have insurance.?

Still doesn?t answer the question directly, right? Jay mentions people in the auto industry who have never been able to get insurance, and Romney dodges:

?Well, we?ll look at circumstance where someone was ill, and hasn?t been insured so far. But people have had the chance to be insured. ?If you?re working at an auto business, for instance.?

After Romney?s recent insurance comments at the campaign stop in Orlando, Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter blasted the GOP frontrunner?s stance, saying:

?Mitt Romney just clarified the choice in this election ? he?d put insurance companies back in charge.?People living with pre-existing conditions from asthma to breast cancer are on their own if Mitt Romney is elected president and millions more would lose their health insurance.?

Exercise and Physical Activity Benefits for a Healthy Life

Posted on : 14-06-2012 | By : mary | In : Health Tips

health newsNearly everyone knows and understands the many benefits associated with physical activity and exercise. So many though are too frustrated to even try. Perhaps if word got out about just how exciting the benefits are, there would be more eagerness to do it. Seriously, sometimes that is all it comes down to because it is easy to find an excuse to avoid exercise. For most people it will boil down to one choice that is either yes or no. Hopefully, these three benefits for exercising and physical activity will serve to motivate you.

The skin care industry makes billions every year because we place such high importance on appearance. There are other healthy benefits such as improving the quality of skin with regular fitness exercise.

The largest organ we have is our skin, and if you do regular exercise your skin will become healthier. To do this you must increase the blood flow through exercise.

Maintaining fitness makes your brain more powerful and efficient. When you are smarter some say that is because you have more brainpower. Your mental clarity and brain performance will be measurably increased. Because of the sustained higher levels of blood circulating, your brain will have more oxygen and just like the skin a higher removal rate of toxins.

Increasing your brain wave activity will make your brain work faster.

It is believed that regular exercise can reduce the risk of women developing breast cancer by about 60%. What an amazing benefit. In the end, it impacts two hormones that are highly associated with breast cancer. The risks of breast cancer are reduced with these exercises because they lead to lower amounts of these hormones being produced. It is also believed that even when these hormones are being produced at their highest levels, regular exercise can serve to reduce the risks.

Healthy nutritional habits can be brought into your life through exercise. Exercise should be something that you enjoy and are naturally good at. If you don?t like what you are doing then you have a higher chance of quitting, so it makes sense that people will stick with what they enjoy doing.

Syrian troops renew shelling of Homs; 38 killed

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government forces pounded parts of central Homs province Sunday in a renewed push to regain control of rebel-held territories, and activists said at least 38 people were killed by shelling there over the past 24 hours.

The main opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council, elected a Kurdish dissident as its new leader in hopes of overcoming the disorganization and infighting that has hobbled the opposition since the popular revolt against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011.

The government assault focused on the town of Qusair, near the border with Lebanon, where activists reported at least six people died on Sunday. Three others were killed in in shelling of the town of Talbiseh, north of the city of Homs, according to the Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The mortars came down on Qusair by the dozens," said Abu al-Hoda, a Qusair-based activist. He said women and children have been huddled for days in basements of apartment buildings, too fearful to come out. On Saturday, 29 people died in violence across Homs province, according to activists.

Regime forces also unleashed a new round of heavy shelling and sent reinforcements to a mountainous area near the coastal city of Latakia, where hundreds of rebels have set up a base and fierce fighting has raged in recent days.

The fighting between government troops backed by helicopter gunships and armed groups in the area of Haffa began on Tuesday. Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the Observatory, said at least 58 soldiers have been killed and more than 200 wounded in the operation there since it began.

He said the heavy losses indicate the seriousness of the challenge in the mountainous area where "hundreds" of rebels are entrenched. His estimated death toll could not be independently verified.

State-run news agency SANA said "terrorist groups" in Haffa attacked public and private institutions on Saturday and committed "heinous" crimes against civilians, setting fire to the national hospital and forcing people to leave their homes. It said troops killed a number of them and arrested several others, adding it was still pursuing gunmen and working to restore security to the area.

Six children were among 10 people killed by a shell that exploded in a house where they had taken cover during the fighting in the region on Saturday, the Observatory said.

Activists claim more than 13,000 people have been killed in violence since the uprising began 15 months ago. International envoy Kofi Annan brokered a cease-fire that was supposed to take effect on April 12 but never really took hold.

Armed rebels have stepped up their attacks on government troops recently, taking their fight against Assad to the capital Damascus, which on Friday saw some of the most intense fighting since the uprising began.

In northern Syria, thousands took part Sunday in the funeral for nine people who died in reported shelling Saturday night of the town of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib province.

Amateur video posted online by activists Sunday showed a large crowd taking part in the funeral procession. The victims were placed on makeshift stretchers which were carried in the streets as people chanted and mourned their death.

The opposition Syrian National Council chose Abdulbaset Sieda, a 56-year-old activist who has been living for many years in exile in Sweden, as their new leader. He was the only candidate to replace liberal opposition leader Burhan Ghalioun for the three-month presidency. He was elected unanimously during an SNC meeting Saturday night in Istanbul that stretched into early hours Sunday.

The Paris-based Ghalioun had presided over the council since it was created last August but recently offered to step down over mounting criticism of his leadership and repeated renewals of his three-month term. Several prominent Syrian dissidents have quit the group calling it an "autocratic" organization no better than Assad's authoritarian rule.

They also complained the group was dominated by Islamists, including the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.

The SNC's international backers have repeatedly appealed for the movement to pull together and work as one unit. The SNC itself has been plagued by infighting, hampering efforts by Western and Arab nations to help the opposition.

Sieda is a secular member of Syria's minority Kurdish community. He is seen as a neutral, consensus figure and has said his priority would be to expand the council to include more opposition figures, particularly from Syria's religious minorities.

In his first comments at a news conference in Istanbul, Sieda pledged to work on restructuring the SNC to make it more inclusive and to reach out to other groups within the opposition.

"We are now in the process of repairing the relationship between the SNC and the forces working inside Syria so that we may reach common grounds between us," he said. "There will be changes in the coming weeks both within the forces inside the SNC and the forces that will hopefully join the group," he added.

His elevation to the post of SNC chief could be part of an attempt to appeal to Syria's significant Kurdish minority, which has largely stayed on the sidelines of the uprising. The community is deeply suspicious that Sunni Arabs who dominate the opposition will be no more likely to provide them greater rights than what they have had under Assad's regime.

Sieda said he was already engaged in talks with the main Kurdish umbrella group, the Kurdish National Council, whose delegates walked out of an SNC gathering in March after the group ignored Kurdish demands it support political decentralization and Kurdish rights in a post-Assad state.

"He is an academic. He's also well-known, a moderate man. We shouldn't claim that he has Islamic tendencies or secular tendencies. He has been approved and accepted by everyone," Abdel Hamid Al Attassi, a member of the SNC, said of Sieda.
