Missing Louisiana student Mickey Shunick's recovered bike suffered significant damage to the rear tire, including a bent rim, authorities said today.
The bike was discovered in a muddy basin under a bridge Sunday morning, but authorities had been tight-lipped about its condition. The bike was about 27 miles from where Shunick, 22, was last seen on surveillance footage riding her bike home from a friend's house at around 2 a.m. May 19 in Lafayette, La.
"We strongly believe that the person, or perpetrator, drove down to the edge of the water and dumped the bike into the water for it not to be found," Cpl. Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department said.
That the bike was found damaged and dumped near a highway suggests Shunick might have been hit by a car, ABC News consultant and former FBI special agent Brad Garrett said.
"If her bike was hit by a vehicle...you may be able to tell from the damage whether it was intentional or not," he said. "[There] could be a wealth of information potentially gathered in addition to the location of the bike."
Garrett said the bike could have paint from the suspect's vehicle on it or DNA from Shunick or the suspect.
Authorities are also searching for the drivers of three cars -- a white pickup truck, a four-door Chevy and an older model sedan - that were spotted on security footage around the same time and in the same area where Shunick was last seen.
"The vehicles we're looking for are just vehicles of interest, not necessarily suspects," he said. "We know those vehicles were in the area and in the immediate area."
When asked whether police had been able to contact any of the vehicles' drivers, Mouton said, "Not as of yet, but we are working on some things as of now."
Consultant Garrett said, "It's very important for them to locate and identify the drivers of the vehicles that were on surveillance tape because one of them could be the suspect, but, equally important, they could be witnesses."
While police have called off the large-scale search parties, they said they have not given up hope that Shunick could still be alive and are following up on "hundreds" of tips. Private search group Texas EquuSearch conducting a grid search of the city and surrounding areas.
Shunick's family is also still hopeful.
"I think a lot of different things could have happened: someone made a mistake, hit her, picked her up or something and then they freaked out and have her somewhere," Shunick's sister, Charlene Shunick, told KATC-TV. Charlene Shunick said she is "really excited" about the recovery of the bike because it means her sister is "still somewhere out there."
"We didn't get the bad feeling in the pit of our stomachs like, 'Oh, my God, this is terrible,'" she said. "It was more like, 'Oh, my God, finally we found something of Mickey's.' And we realized that someone definitely took her and this was planned out ... whoever has her is thinking about these things."
Shunick's father, Tom Shunick, told KATC his new life is dedicated to finding his daughter. "Everyday life ended nine or 10 days ago," he said. "Now all we do is we get up every day and hope to hear a phone call about something ... I'm helpless."
Shunick is a student at the University of Louisiana. She is described as 5-foot-1 and 115 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), is to enter the $4bn-a-year market for Internet core routers, with breakthrough technologies that promise enhanced capacity and connectivity, improved energy consumption and dramatically lower costs for the world?s communication networks.
The international telecommunications group today unveiled?products?that modernize the global backbone of the Internet to deal with the new era of video and cloud-based services. In a similar way to telephone exchanges controlling the flow of voice traffic and communications, Internet Protocol (IP) core routers control the flow of data and video traffic in metropolitan areas and cities, across national network backbones and in the global Internet.
Rapidly rising demand for online video and data is being driven by smartphones, tablets, connected TVs and other devices, and enabled by faster copper, fiber and wireless broadband access. These dynamics are forcing network operators to accelerate capacity upgrades in the core of their networks. At the same time, the emergence of cloud-based services and personalized content is driving the need for more flexibility in these networks to quickly adapt to the requirements of consumers and businesses.
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive of Alcatel-Lucent, said: ?The new digital economy demands constant and rapid evolution of the networks that manage and deliver data traffic, connecting the hand of consumers with their content and applications in the cloud. Our market entry is the data equivalent of revolutionizing telephone exchanges. It will enable our customers to optimize the delivery of Internet video, gaming, photo sharing and data-hungry business applications.?
Speaking at Alcatel-Lucent?s annual technology symposium, Mr. Verwaayen said the new technologies had been pioneered by the company?s fast-growing IP division, which has already secured more than 25 percent of the market for service provider ?edge routers? ? the systems that network operators deploy to manage broadband connections and service quality for residential and business users.
Alcatel-Lucent estimates its new products, which have taken more than three years to develop, will deliver a five-fold improvement in?capacity and performance as well as energy savings of 66 percent compared with today?s typical IP core routers. Network operators currently spend an estimated $4bn a year* on IP core routers and the combined global energy consumption of core routers has been estimated by Bell Labs to exceed 1.8 Terawatts by 2016, the equivalent of 128,000 homes.
?For over a decade we have invested in advanced silicon and software technology, most recently demonstrated by our breakthrough network processor chipset,?FP3, announced?in June 2011.? Now we are applying this technology to the largest nodes in the Internet, core routers.? said?Basil Alwan, president of the company?s Internet Protocol division. ?Our?7950 XRS core router systems?sit at the massive intersections of the Internet, where billions of individual messages are directed to the correct destinations every second.? Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, LACE, held their annual auction and fundraiser to a stellar crowd on the mean streets of Hollywood. The hoi polloi of LA artists and collectors rubbed elbows and maybe poked a few eyes in competition for the many fine art works. Brilliantly, executive director Carol Stakenas and her associate director Robert Crouch chose 28 curators to select the work of over 150 artists. Paddles up! Just interested in knowing the breakdown of pensions on this board. From anecdotal evidence, it sounds like opinions on pensions are split down the middle.

Self employed people can opt out of receiving a state pension if they don't pay the NI contributions.

Surely most people who didn't join a corporation at 18 or 21 and stay there for life have a mix ... I have at least two defined benefit schemes sitting waiting on me (one reasonably large) and several defined contribution pots as well which I've always pondered bringing together. As I just turned 50 I'm hammering away at AVCs into the current one.
I suspect the check-boxes won't capture the complexity of most people's arrangements.
Also I suspect the sample here will be rather different from the public at large.

I retired in my mid fifties but the questions don't really fit my situation.
During my working life I paid into the state pension through NI. For some of the time I paid into the state higher pension schemes, opted out and paid into a private pension scheme, then opted back in again.
My retirement is funded by a mixture of income from savings, money from the sale of my business, annuity bought with private pension pot. State pension does not kick in for a few more years.

It looks to me like there is a massive coordinated attempt by the various VIs to engineer a spring bounce by press releases and trolling popular Internet forums such as this.
Following the reported 1.9% monthly rise from a government controlled lender and the (expected) 0.5% rate cut, this forum seems to be targeted by bulls, many joining in the last few day to talk up the market.
The general drift seems to be... 'Savings accounts are paying a pittance so get into property now and pick up a bargain'.
I wonder if the various EA and lenders associations are emailing their members, suggesting that joining this forum to talk up the market would be a good idea.

State Pension, but the good sh1t! Army pension, always assuming there's money in the coffers to fund it
Also contribute a small percentage of wage to my present companies pension plan (non-defined), but only because the company adds a similar amount.
Will have paid off my home before I hit 55, and my partners previous home is already providing an income.
Not too worried about working on, as I have that rarest of things, a job I enjoy

Some respondents may believe that it won't exist by the time they come to retire, it'll be worth so little as to be insignificant and/or that they won't survive long enough to collect it.

what is missing as option to fund the pension is inheritance - this will be increasingly true for many when their (often, but of course not always, wealthy) boomer parents retire. in the past, inheritance helped getting a house for your growing family (the house you inherited). today, as people get older, inheritance typically comes just in time when you retire. IF care etc has not eaten it away...
anyway, my retirement plan is my house ;-) which I plan to own outright well before I retire, and then we plan to sell it and move to a sunny country. Then there is a defined contribution pension plan (currently worth about ?100k, and by the time I retire in 25 yrs hopefully about ?300k at today's value), plus two expected inheritances of in total about (at current value) ?300k in about 25yrs. This should be in total well above ?1m (at today's value) in 25 yrs time, from four different independent sources. And of course there is still the basic state pension, which I assume will still exist in one way or another but I prefer not to rely on it as by then it might only be available for the poorest, so most likely not for me.

?I needed help to so many things, but I had nowhere to go. Thus I established Retretten.?
In 2002 I Rita Nilsen founded Retretten (?The Retreat?) in response to the suffering and personal needs I experienced during the early phase of my own rebuilding and recovery from my subtance abuse.
I had no money to get professional help, no job and no ?sober? network. Hence it was tough to start a life free of substance abuse. What I really needed was much help in different areas, but I had no place to go to get such help, support and advice.
I gained much support through my friendship with Petter, a recovered alcoholic. I got further help from a self-help group and some from frequent talks with a Vicar. This together with the medical knowledge I gained from my education became my way out off my substance abuse.
During my acupuncture practice period I understood I was not alone in feeling this inner pain I was carrying with me. Not due to my substance abuse, but as a consequence of the traumas I suffered that meant I took the wrong path early in life. During this period I mainly met children whose parents were substance abusers or mentally ill. These children helped me understand how to better help those affected.
That is where the initial of Retretten was established and after 2 years it was registered as a Foundation. You or someone you know today can use Retretten as long as you yourself are a substance abuser, or have been convicted or are next of kin of someone who is.
