KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Andy Murray erased a championship point Sunday and rallied past David Ferrer 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1) in a grueling, dramatic final at the Sony Open.

One point from defeat in the last set, Murray skipped a forehand off the baseline to stay in the match. He then dominated the tiebreaker, while Ferrer appeared to cramp and collapsed to the court after one long exchange.

The match was filled with grinding baseline rallies, including at least a dozen of more than 20 strokes and one lasting 34. Murray and Ferrer dueled for 2 hours, 45 minutes, and as a result, the 11:30 a.m. start on Easter turned out not to be early enough for CBS.

The network cut away from the final when it went to the tiebreaker, switching to the tipoff of the NCAA tournament game between Michigan and Florida. Tennis Channel televised the end of the match, and CBS later showed a replay of match point.

"We stayed with tennis as long as we could," a CBS spokeswoman said.

Tournament director Adam Barrett said CBS officials had a commitment to show the basketball.

"They stayed with our match for as long as possible, forgoing their pre-NCAA tournament coverage and delaying the start of the Michigan-Florida tipoff in an attempt to complete its broadcast of the match," Barrett said in a statement. "Although we wish the match could have been shown in its entirety, we understand that these situations do arise."

CBS viewers missed a dramatic finish. Murray became the first Key Biscayne men's champion to save a championship point.

"Both of us fought as hard as we could, both struggling physically at the end," Murray said. "I just managed to come through."

Murray also won the title in 2009. His path to this year's championship was made easier because Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal skipped the tournament and Novak Djokovic lost in the fourth round.

Murray made a breakthrough last year by winning an Olympic gold medal and his first Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open. He'll now move ahead of Federer to No. 2 in the rankings behind Djokovic.

The No. 3-seeded Ferrer, who was seeking the biggest title of his career, fell to 0-13 against top-five players in finals. Spaniards are 0-6 in the Key Biscayne men's final, with Nadal losing three of those matches.

But Murray sang the praises of Ferrer, a frequent practice partner.

"He's one of the best players in the world," Murray said. "Every time I play against him, people expect me to win. I say it's so tough against him. He has a great attitude and is a great fighter."

Murray lives 15 minutes from the tournament site, near downtown Miami, and trains in South Florida. But the sellout crowd was firmly behind Ferrer.

"Playing here in Miami is like when I play in Spain," Ferrer said during the trophy ceremony.

"I'm sorry," he added, managing a chuckle. "I'm so sorry. One point. Next time."

Playing in sunny, 80-degree weather, Murray and Ferrer both appeared drained in the third set, which started with six consecutive service breaks.

Murray was a point from defeat serving at 5-6. When he hit a forehand on the line, Ferrer stopped to challenge the call. A weary Murray leaned on his racket while replay confirmed the ruling to make the score deuce.

"That's the beauty of the challenge system," Murray said. "In some matches, it would have been over. Luckily it just dropped in."

He won the game to hold two points later, then raced to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker. At 4-1, a 28-stroke exchange ended with Ferrer pulling a backhand wide, and he then crumbled to the concrete, apparently from leg cramps.

Ferrer limped through the final two points. When Murray hit a return winner for the victory, he quickly dropped his racket, eager to call it a day. The two exhausted finalists then met at the net to trade pats on the back.

The final match of the men's tournament was the longest.

Google launching same-day delivery service for online shoppers ...

Internet search leader Google is taking another step beyond information retrieval into grocery delivery.

The new service, called Google Shopping Express, will initially provide same-day delivery of food and other products bought online by a small group of consumers in San Francisco and suburbs located south of the city. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., didn't say how many people will be part of the test.

If the pilot program goes well, Google plans to expand delivery service to other markets.

"We hope this will help users explore the benefits of a local, same-day delivery service, and help us kick the tires on the new service," Google said in a Thursday statement.

The delivery service is part of Google's effort to increase consumer reliance on the Internet, so it will have more opportunities to show online ads, which generate most of its revenue.

Google has learned that the more time people spend online, the more likely they are to use its dominant search engine or one of its other popular services, like its YouTube video site or Gmail, that include advertising.

The delivery service also could spur merchants to buy more online ads if Google's same-day delivery service encourages consumers to do more of their shopping online. Having to wait days or, in some cases, more than a week for the delivery of online orders ranks among the biggest drawbacks to Internet shopping.

It's a problem that Amazon.com and eBay, which operate the largest e-commerce sites, already have been trying to solve by offering same-day service in some U.S. markets. Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, also offers same-day delivery in five markets.

A mix of national, regional and neighborhood merchants are enlisting in Google Shopping Express. The best-known names on the list include Target and Walgreen. All the merchants in the Google program will sell certain items through a central website. Google has hired courier services to pick up the orders at the merchant stores and then deliver them to the customer's home or office.

Although the couriers will be working on a contract basis, they will be driving Google-branded vehicles and wearing company-issued uniforms.

It remains unclear whether Internet shopping and same-day delivery can be profitable. Online grocer Webvan collapsed in 2001, largely because it couldn't devise a pricing plan that would pay for the costs of same-day delivery without alienating shoppers unwilling to pay too much extra for the added convenience.

Google is still trying to figure out how much to charge for its same-day delivery service. For the six-month test period in the San Francisco area, consumers won't have to pay a surcharge. Google instead will receive a commission from participating merchants.

The expansion into same-day delivery comes at the same time that Google is preparing to close some of its older online services so it can devote more attention and money to other projects.

The realignment has irked some Google users. The biggest complaints have centered on Google Reader, which allows people to automatically receive headlines and links from their favorite sites, and iGoogle, which allows Web surfers to design a page consisting of the Google search engine surrounded set up other online features, such as local weather reports and stock market quotes.

Google Reader is scheduled to close in July and iGoogle will shut down in November.

Correction: FDA-Multiple Sclerosis Drug story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story March 27 about a new multiple sclerosis drug, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Novartis' drug Gilenya was launched in March 2011. The drug was launched in October 2010.

A corrected version of the story is below:

FDA approves new multiple sclerosis capsules

FDA approves pill-based Biogen Idec drug for multiple sclerosis symptoms

By MATTHEW PERRONE

AP Health Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it approved a new drug from Biogen Idec to control multiple sclerosis in adults with hard-to-treat forms of the disease.

The twice-a-day capsules, called Tecfidera, offer a new option for multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease in which the body attacks its own nervous system. Cambridge, Mass.-based Biogen Idec already sells two other drugs for the disease, but both require injections.

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis and most patients experience relapses of symptoms, including loss of balance, weakness in arms and legs, and blurred vision. Over time patients usually become weaker and less coordinated. More than 2 million people worldwide have the disease, with about 400,000 of them in the U.S., according to Biogen.

The FDA said it approved Tecfidera based on two studies showing patients taking the drug had fewer relapses than patients taking a dummy pill.

The approval gives Biogen a new product in an increasingly crowded field of multiple sclerosis drugs.

The biotech drugmaker already sells the once-a-week multiple sclerosis injection Avonex. It also markets the once-a-month injection Tysabri through a partnership with Elan Corp. PLC of Ireland. However, Tysabri's severe side effects have curtailed its use.

Tecfidera is designed to be taken orally, which could make it a preferred option for patients and doctors.

A Biogen executive said Wednesday that its three drugs would be used to treat different groups of patients.

"Multiple sclerosis is a reasonably complex disease and we think there are a lot of needs out there," said Tony Kingsely, a vice president at Biogen. "By having three drugs out there I think we can address a lot of those needs."

Kinglsey said the company will announce the pricing of the drug when it begins shipping in the next week.

Novartis launched the first pill-based multiple sclerosis drug, Gilenya, in October 2010. Sanofi won FDA approval for a second pill, its drug Aubagio, last September.

The top-selling drug for the disease worldwide is Copaxone, which is made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. That injection had sales of nearly $4 billion last year, according to Teva's latest financial report.

Avonex and Tysabri had annual sales of $2.7 billion and $1.5 billion in 2011, the most recent year for which Biogen has reported annual sales.

Biogen Idec Inc. shares rose $5.59, or 3.2 percent, to close Wednesday at $182.68.

Glass Lewis urges MetroPCS shareholders vote down T-Mobile USA deal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Proxy advisor Glass Lewis on Friday became the second firm to suggest that MetroPCS Communications Inc shareholders vote against its proposed merger with T-Mobile USA, adding pressure on Deutsche Telekom AG to offer a sweeter deal.

The advisory follows a recommendation by larger proxy firm ISS late on Wednesday night that shareholders should vote against the deal with T-Mobile USA, the U.S. business of Deutsche Telekom. A smaller advisory firm, Egan Jones, had recommended its clients vote in favor of the transaction.

Glass Lewis said in a report released late Thursday that the proposed transaction undervalues MetroPCS's contribution to the combined company, adding that it believes MetroPCS shareholders could likely realize additional value in the short term if the company remained independent.

Glass Lewis also said that if MetroPCS shareholders vote against the deal, they could potentially receive a better offer.

A MetroPCS spokesperson said in an emailed statement that the board remains committed to the deal and thinks it is in the best interest of stockholders.

Analysts said on Thursday that ISS siding with shareholder activists would likely force Deutsche Telekom to improve the terms of the deal. ISS had complained about the negative market response to the proposed deal, a lower valuation than justified and MetroPCS's potential to thrive as a standalone company.

Paulson & Co, the biggest MetroPCS shareholder, and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management, another big shareholder, had both committed to vote against the deal on concerns about the valuation and the amount of debt being assigned to the combined company.

Even so, another major shareholder - Madison Dearborn - had put its support behind the deal.

T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. mobile provider, and its smaller rival MetroPCS want to pool their spectrum resources and networks in order to better compete with larger rivals Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel.

Under the terms of the reverse-merger announced in October, Deutsche Telekom would end up with a 74 percent stake in the combined company, and MetroPCS would declare a 1-for-2 reverse stock split and pay $1.5 billion in cash to its shareholders.

If the deal collapses, it would be a huge blow for Deutsche Telekom after being forced in 2011 to abandon its plan to sell T-Mobile USA to AT&T for $39 billion due to opposition by regulators.

On top of these issues, the companies are soon expected to face tougher competition from an emboldened Sprint, which has agreed to sell 70 percent of its shares to Japan's SoftBank Corp for $20 billion.

P. Schoenfeld Asset Management LP, which says it owns about 2.5 percent of MetroPCS, is leading a proxy battle against the deal. Paulson & Co has a 9.9 percent stake, and Madison Dearborn owns about 8.3 percent of MetroPCS shares, according to the most recent public disclosures.

MetroPCS shares have slid more than 8 percent since October 1, 2012, the day before reports emerged that MetroPCS and Deutsche Telekom were in talks.

Fewer children mean longer life?

Thursday, March 28, 2013

New research into ageing processes, based on modern genetic techniques, confirms theoretical expectations about the correlation between reproduction and lifespan. Studies of birds reveal that those that have offspring later in life and have fewer broods live longer. And the decisive factor is telomeres, shows research from The University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of chromosomes. The length of telomeres influences how long an individual lives.

Telomeres start off at a certain length, become shorter each time a cell divides, decline as the years pass by until the telomeres can no longer protect the chromosomes, and the cell dies. But the length of telomeres varies significantly among individuals of the same age. This is partly due to the length of the telomeres that has been inherited from the parents, and partly due to the amount of stress an individual is exposed to.

"This is important, not least for our own species, as we are all having to deal with increased stress," says Angela Pauliny, Researcher from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

Researchers have studied barnacle geese, which are long-lived birds, the oldest in the study being 22 years old. The results show that geese, compared to short-lived bird species, have a better ability to preserve the length of their telomeres. The explanation is probably that species with a longer lifespan invest more in maintaining bodily functions than, for example, reproduction.

"There is a clear correlation between reproduction and ageing in the animal world. Take elephants, which have a long lifespan but few offspring, while mice, for example, live for a short time but produce a lot of offspring each time they try," says Angela Pauliny.

The geese studied by researchers varied in age, from very young birds to extremely old ones. Each bird was measured twice, two years apart. One striking result was that the change in telomere length varied according to gender.

"The study revealed that telomeres were best-preserved in males. Among barnacle geese, the telomeres thus shorten more quickly in females, which in birds is the sex with two different gender chromosomes. Interestingly, it is the exactl opposite in humans," says Angela Pauliny.

Quantum computing? Physicists' new technique for cooling molecules may be a stepping stone to quantum computing

Mar. 27, 2013 ? The next generation of computers promises far greater power and faster processing speeds than today's silicon-based based machines. These "quantum computers" -- so called because they would harness the unique quantum mechanical properties of atomic particles -- could draw their computing power from a collection of super-cooled molecules.

But chilling molecules to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero, the temperature at which they can be manipulated to store and transmit data, has proven to be a difficult challenge for scientists.

Now, UCLA physicists have pioneered a new technique that combines two traditional atomic cooling technologies and brings normally springy molecules to a frozen standstill. Their research is published March 28 in the journal Nature.

"Scientists have been trying to cool molecules for a decade and have succeeded with only a few special molecules," said Eric Hudson, a UCLA assistant professor of physics and the paper's senior author. "Our technique is a completely different approach to the problem -- it is a lot easier to implement than the other techniques and should work with hundreds of different molecules."

Previous attempts to create ultracold molecules were only effective with one or two specific kinds. Creating a method that can be used with many different molecules would be a major step forward because it is difficult to say which materials might be used in quantum computers or other future applications, Hudson said.

By immersing charged barium chloride molecules in an ultracold cloud of calcium atoms, Hudson and his colleagues are able to prevent most of the molecules from vibrating and rotating. Halting the molecules is a necessary hurdle to overcome before they can be used to store information like a traditional computer does.

"The goal is to build a computer that doesn't work with zeros and ones, but with quantum mechanical objects," Hudson said. "A quantum computer could crack any code created by a classical computer and transmit information perfectly securely."

Hudson's experiment makes molecules extremely cold under highly controlled conditions to reveal the quantum mechanical properties that are hidden under normal circumstances. At room temperature, molecules rocket around, bouncing into each other and exchanging energy. Any information a scientist attempted to store in such a chaotic system would quickly become gibberish.

"We isolate these molecular systems in a vacuum, effectively levitating them in the middle of nothing," Hudson said. "This removes them from the rest of the world that wants to make them classical."

The quantum mechanical world of subatomic particles deviates from the classical world that we observe with the naked eye because according to quantum mechanics, electrons can only exist at specific energy levels. In a quantum computer made of a collection of single atoms, information might be stored by boosting some atomic electrons to higher energy levels while leaving others at lower energy states. However, these atomic energy states are not stable enough to reliably preserve data, Hudson said.

"One of the challenges with atoms is that their energy states are very easily influenced by the outside world," Hudson said. "You make this beautiful quantum state, but then the outside world tries to destroy that information."

Instead of saving data in easily disrupted atomic energy states, a more robust way to store information is in the rotational energy states of molecules, Hudson said. A spinning molecule in the lowest energy rotational state could represent a binary one, while a stationary molecule could represent a binary zero.

Despite applications for quantum computing and other industries, cooling molecules to extremely low temperatures has proved a challenge. Even the simplest molecule composed of only two atoms is a far more complex system than a single atom. Each molecule vibrates and rotates like a miniature whirling slinky, and all of that movement must be stilled so that the molecule can lose energy and cool down.

A new cooling technique

To solve the ultracold molecule conundrum, Hudson and his group first created a floating cloud of calcium atoms corralled by incoming laser beams from all directions. This magneto-optical trap keeps the atoms stationary as it cools them to nearly absolute zero. They then use specialized rods with high, oscillating voltages as part of an ion trap to confine a cloud of positively-charged barium chloride molecules within the ultracold ball of calcium atoms to complete the cooling process.

For the vibrating, energetic molecules to lose heat, they must spend a significant amount of time in contact with the surrounding ultracold atom cloud. Hudson and his colleagues used barium chloride ions, molecules missing one electron, because charged molecules are easier to trap and cool than their neutral counterparts. The use of molecular ions is an essential innovation because previous efforts have demonstrated that neutral molecules ricochet off ultracold atoms without sufficient heat transfer.

"When a molecular ion and a neutral atom get close together they get in tight and bang off each other a bunch before the ion goes away," Hudson said. "When they collide like that it is very easy for the energy in one to go to the other."

While magneto-optical and ion traps are not new to the world of molecular physics, Hudson and his colleagues became the first group to combine these methods to create a cloud of ultracold molecules. This paper is the result of over four years of work spent designing, building, and testing their experiment.

"These two different technologies earned Nobel prizes for the scientists who developed them, but there wasn't really a body of knowledge about how to put these two procedures together," Hudson said.

The research is funded by the Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation.

AP Interview: Egypt says Iranian pose no risk

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's tourism minister said Thursday that allowing Iranian tourists to visit Egypt after being banned for more than three decades would pose no threat and could help shore up the nation's struggling tourism industry.

Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazoua's remarks, in an interview on Thursday with The Associated Press, come amid controversy over allowing Iranians to visit Egypt after decades of frozen diplomatic relations and suspicion ? especially among ultraconservatives ? that Iran aspires to spread its Shiite faith to the Sunni world.

Egypt, which is predominately Sunni, has been working to normalize relations with Iran, after a long freeze that began after Egypt signed its 1979 peace treaty with Israel and Iran underwent its Islamic revolution. Relations began to improve after former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down in the 2011 popular uprising.

Egypt's new Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have exchanged visits, which have opened new avenues of cooperation between the former foes.

Zaazoua, who visited Tehran nearly a month ago and signed a memorandum of understanding to promote tourism, told the AP that Iranians were not going to visit Egypt to export an Islamic revolution. He said Iranian visitors, who would be restricted in their movements, would not be visiting religious sites.

"We have not received Iranians for 35 years," Zaazoua said in his office. "They are pure tourists. They are not coming to create a revolution as far as I am concerned."

"They are coming to visit tourist sites within Egypt," he said referring to the ancient cities of Luxor and Aswan. "They are coming for vacationing."

He said if problems surface, "we can stop it, as simple as that."

Egyptians have mixed feelings toward Iran. Some believe in Iranian plots aimed at destabilizing the country while others sympathize with Iran's Islamic revolution and admire Tehran's defiance of the United States.

Zaazoua's visit to Tehran sparked anger of ultraconservative Islamists like Al Nour party. The party issued a statement warning Morsi's government that opening the country up to Iranians risked plunging the country, which "enjoys a Sunni unity," into sectarian strife.

When Ahmadinejad visited Egypt on Feb. 5, he too got a cold shoulder from some. He was given a harsh reception by Egypt's top Sunni cleric of Al-Azhar and the Iranian leader was attacked by shoe-throwing Syrian protesters upset about Iran's alliance with the embattled Syrian regime.

A new understanding with Iran would be a shake-up for a region that has been split between Tehran's camp ? which includes Syria and Islamic militias Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza ? and a U.S.-backed group led by Saudi Arabia and rich Gulf nations. Further complicating relations, the Islamic militant group Hamas, which rules the Palestinian enclave in the Gaza Strip, is a historical offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, the dominant force in Egyptian politics since Morsi's election.

Zaazoua said preparations were under way to allow Iranian tourists to visit, but he declined to disclose a date.

Last week, Egypt's Foreign and Civil Aviation Ministry established regulations for Iranian tourists, mainly restricting the size and movement of the tourist groups.

Ali al-Ashri, an official with Egypt's Foreign Ministry, said Iranian tourists would only be allowed to visit certain sites, such as the ancient cities of Luxor and resort areas like Sharm el-Sheikh. Cairo was not on the list of places they would be allowed to visit, mainly because it is the site of shrines of revered Shiite figures.

The size of Iranian tourist groups would be limited to 100 persons and there would only be three travel agencies given permits to coordinate the Iranian visits. Flights would carry Iranians directly from Iran to their tourist destination, the civil aviation minister said.

"We don't want to create problems to our country or any other country, including Iran itself," Zaazoua said.

The Egyptian government is looking to boost the tourism business back to pre-revolution levels when 14.7 million tourists visited Egypt in 2010. Continued unrest since the 2011 uprising have scared away tourists and investment. Last year, the number of tourists climbed to more than 10 million, but most tourists go to beach resorts along the Red Sea.

To assuage fears among some that Iranians would try to practice religious rituals in Egypt, Zaazoua emphasized that Iranian tourists would not be allowed to visit religious sites.

"I can't ignore countries like Iran," he said. "I am a technocrat. ... I am looking to just increase the share from international traffic of tourism in the world."

The last look at the Apple, Android and Blackberry App Stores revealed over 600 combined health-related apps on the market. As well as ranging across many price-bands, they also range across many categories and niches.

Many apps these days come as a free version and to access better features a fee is required; though this fee is normally relatively small in line with people?s expectations. Normally the paid version offers the best features and the free versions give only very few or limited features.

However there are still some life-changing and sometimes life-saving options out there.?The categories on offer range from anything from the best sex positions to the best vegan restaurants, from baby name suggestions to calorie counters! The list appears to be endless.

Health & Fitness apps have become very popular because of vogue healthy lifestyle desires. As the world becomes more familiar with the benefits of a healthier lifestyle so will the competition for these apps in the marketplace. Most come with the same basic features ? including GPS locators, heart rate monitors, run times and route selectors.

The problem recently with health & fitness apps in particular has been the bug fixes and updates which have plagued this still relatively infantile market. Many users have lost interest with an app once it has crashed and lost all of their data and stats.

The Transistor Desktop

The Transistor Desktop Reader Raghken was so enamored with the teaser trailer for Supergiant Games' upcoming title, Transistor (you can read all about it over at Kotaku) that he built this week's featured desktop around it. Even if you're unfamiliar with the game, the wallpaper is gorgeous.

If you are familiar with the game (or familiar with Supergiant Games' previous hit game, Bastion, you'll want to keep an eye out for Transistor. It looks great. If you're not into video games, just appreciate the stylized cityscape wallpaper, and the way Raghken incorporated Rainmeter into it like it belongs there.

Here's how he did it, and what you'll need to make it your own:

  • The wallpaper, an HD screencap from the Transistor teaser trailer
  • The Julius Sans One font for the Rainmeter widgets and system text (the same font used in the trailer)
  • Rainmeter, a system tweaking and monitoring tool for Windows
  • The Simple Media theme for Rainmeter for the time and date display
  • The Elementary theme for Rainmeter for the weather
  • The Rainbow theme for the app launcher in the upper left
  • The Muziko theme for Rainmeter for the "Now Playing" display

With those themes and the right font, you should have no trouble making this desktop your own, or just tweaking it so it fits better with your workflow. If you do run into issues though, stop by the original thread in our #featured-desktop forum to ask your questions, or check out our guide to Rainmeter for tips.

Do you have a good-looking, functional desktop that you want to see featured here? Submit it?along with where you got the wallpaper, skins, and geeklets?to us for review. We have two different ways you can share it with us:

Linux, Mac, Windows, all are welcome. Whatever you choose to use, include a description of how you made your desktop when you send it in. Without that, we can't tell others how to make it for themselves so they can be featured too!

Bing Offers Recommendations for SEO-Friendly AJAX - Deon Designs

Bing has announced support for HTML5 pushState as a way to implement AJAX on a site in a way that enables Bing to crawl and index the URLs and content. Since Google has supported this implementation since early 2012, site owners finally have an AJAX option that can be crawled and indexed by both major search engines in the United States. (Of course, the ease of implementing is another story altogether.)

Bing tells me that while they still support the #! version of crawlable AJAX originally launched by Google, they?re finding it?s not implemented correctly much of the time and they strongly recommend pushState instead.

Why AJAX Can Be Difficult to Crawl and Index

One common use of AJAX is to make the web site experience faster for a visitor, but this implementation can have drawbacks for SEO. Imagine, for instance, a page with several tabs of content.

tab example

A web developer could implement this one of several ways.

  • A separate URL for each tab ? with this implementation, when the visitor clicks a tab,?a new request is made to the server for a completely new page. The URL structure might look something like:
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=two
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=three
  • CSS for each tab ? with this implementation, the server returns the contents of all tabs with the first page request. When the visitor clicks a tab, the CSS rules cause the browser to hide the contents associated with one tab and show the contents associated with clicked tab. Only one URL is associated with the page, like this:
  • AJAX rending of each tab ? with this implementation, when the visitor clicks a tab, only the changing portion of the page is replaced. The URL structure might look something like:
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page#tab=two
    • http://www.example.com/my-web-page#tab=three

As with most things, pros and cons exist for each option. A separate URL for each tab is easy to share and bookmark and is easy for search engines to crawl and index (they can extract all of the content from each page and have a separate URL to associate with each), but reloading the entire contents of each page can be slow.

CSS for each tab is also easy for search engines to crawl and index and in some cases, the combined page may rank higher than the same content broken into three pages (due to consolidated incoming links and relevancy signals). But the request for all of that content at once can be the slowest of all to render and users can?t share or bookmark the page with a secondary tab as active.

AJAX rendering is fastest and enables easy sharing and bookmarking. But search engines have historically had the hardest time with this implementation. Search engines have trouble extracting content from AJAX/JavaScript calls (although Google has been getting better at it). And # in a URL started as a way to link to content within a page and so search engines tend to ignore everything in a URL past the #.

Crawlable AJAX

In 2009, Google put together a way to make AJAX crawlable. With this method, a the web page would use #! rather than #, like this:

For a normal user agent, such as a browser, the # would trigger the AJAX portion of the page, just as it would in a normal AJAX implementation. However, a search engine user agent such as Google would see the #! section of the URL and then request a special version of the page (replacing #! with ?_escaped_fragment_=). In response, the server would return a static version of the page with the contents normally rendered through JavaScript. The benefits of this implementation were that search engines could associate a separate URL with each set of content and even better, could extract all of that content.

In 2011, Bing began supporting this implementation?and included a checkbox in their webmaster tools so site owners could let them know it was being used on a site (they?ve since removed the checkbox as they?ve gotten better at detecting and crawling it).

As with the other implementations, this has its drawbacks as well, not least of which is the complicated implementation. ?Bing?s latest blog post notes:

?Developers had to rely on overly-complicated protocols such as ?crawlable AJAX?, which uses the #! (?Hash bang?) signature.? This was meant to make AJAX development easier in regards to SEO, but it actually complicated things both for search engines as well as webmasters trying to implement, maintain, and debug their AJAX-driven web pages and applications.

With pushState, we can fully omit the complexity of transforming between ?pretty? AJAX URLs and ?ugly? static URLs. Search Engines will crawl and index the same URL used by you customers. We are back to business as usual for SEO, including pretty SEO well-understood URLs schema?http://domain/path/file?name=value_parameters. This helps you focus on the usual SEO activities (links, page content, etc.) without having to do worry about complex page transformations.?

I asked Bing?s Fabrice Canel, who wrote the post, if Bing still supports the #! version of AJAX URLs, and he told me:

??We are still supporting the #! crawlable AJAX method but as I said, we do not recommend it at all and we really prefer pushState which is far easier for webmasters and web developers to adopt and maintain.?

HTML5 pushState

With HTML5 pushState, pages can take advantage of the best of both worlds: URLs without # (so search engines can easily index them) and dynamically rendered content for only the change portion of the page (to make things as speedy as possible).

With pushState, URLs look like the first example (a separate URL for each tab), but operate like the third example (AJAX rendering of each tab and the resulting URLs look as follows:

  • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=two
  • http://www.example.com/my-web-page?tab=three

There are other, more complex ways of getting to this same result, such as Hijax, but pushState can be much easier.

Google has been supportive of HTML5 since the beginning?(Google?s?Maile Ohye in particular began recommending it conferences in early 2012) and recently published a video in support of HTML5 pushState.

YouTube Preview Image

In the video, Google?s Matt Cutts noted:

?A correctly implemented site that uses pushState typically doesn?t need any extra support in order for us to be able to crawl it. We do support both [pushState and #!] and we do handle both standards? but [pushState] is something that I would encourage you to look into and it can be quite helpful in making sure things can be crawlable.?

And now Bing has announced support as well.

Of course, HTML5 has its drawbacks as well, notably that not all older browsers support it, and can require significantly engineering resources to implement (as you?re replacing the current site?s HTML implementation).

If your site uses AJAX-based URLs (either the # versions noted above, or versions that don?t change at all when ?content changes) and are subsequently the site is not fully crawled and indexed and you?re looking for solutions, HTML5 pushState is definitely worth looking into.

If your site uses the crawlable #! URLs and isn?t having any trouble being indexed, then you can leave things as they are for now. Both Google and Bing continue to support this implementation.

If you?re considering adding AJAX to your site, make sure you think through the implementation carefully and take into account what content search engines can extract and whether the URLs are indexable.

Napolitano rejects ?border trigger? in immigration proposal

Janet Napolitano (Christian Science Monitor)

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Tuesday rejected a "border trigger" provision many Republican lawmakers say must be included in immigration reform legislation.

The proposal, which would require that that the U.S. border with Mexico be declared secure before illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S. could apply for citizenship, has sparked significant concern among progressives and union leaders. And Napolitano, a Democrat and former Arizona governor, revealed Tuesday at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast roundtable in Washington that she also believes it shouldn't be put into practice.

"Once people really look at the whole system and how it works, relying on one thing as a so-called trigger is not the way to go," Napolitano said, adding that there "needs to be certainty" in an immigration reform bill.

A bipartisan group group of senators known as the "Gang of 8" and some House members are currently working on immigration reform legislation in Congress and have been in communication with Napolitano personally and with her department.

But Napolitano on Tuesday refused to offer reporters any additional details on her communications with the Senate group.

She did reveal her belief that times have changed.

Napolitano noted that four years ago when she took the helm of the department, there was little appetite for immigration reform among members of Congress while two wars were being waged.

And last year, the 2012 election helped pushed things forward, she said.

"I think now is the time ... I think the election had consequences in that regard."

When asked to rate the Senate group's odds of success, Napolitano offered a nonspecific answer.

"I'm always optimistic," she said.

Napolitano said that today, 10 years after the creation of Department of Homeland Security in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the U.S./Mexico border is more secure than ever before.

Napolitano mentioned a range of issues that fall under her department in addition to immigration, including the Secret Service, customs and border protection and, largely, terrorism.

Napolitano defended the recent decision by the Transportation Security Administration to permit pocketknives on airplanes, something originally outlawed after the 9/11 attacks. Members of Congress and other critics expressed outrage over the decision to make an exception for pocketknives, a decision set to take effect April 25.

But Napolitano on Tuesday said the move was appropriate.

"I think, frankly, it's the right decision," she said. "From a security standpoint, we're trying to prevent a bomb from getting on a plane, and if you're talking about a small knife, there are already things on a plane that somebody could convert into a small, sharp object."

She mentioned that what keeps her awake at night are unseen threats.

It's "not what I know about, 'cause what I know about, we can do something about," Napolitano said. "It's what's out there that I don't know about."

What she doesn't lie awake at night thinking about is the 2016 election.

?I think my plate is so full right now that I think that contemplation would be the kind of thing that would keep me up at night,? Napolitano said, brushing off a question about her presidential aspirations. ?And I lose enough sleep as it is.?

Combating terrorism and defending against attacks is a daily mission of the department, Napolitano said, adding that her department is aiming to hire "600 hackers for good," who will be focused on cyber threats.

Napolitano said she spends a lot of her time working on relations with the private sector with regard to cyber security.

But oddly enough, that doesn't mean she's personally up on the latest cyber technology.

Napolitano explained Tuesday that she does not use email. At all.

And she hasn't used email since she served as Arizona's attorney general around the year 2000.

"I think email sucks up time," she said, lamenting the hundreds of emails she found herself forced to "scroll through" daily and the way in which people used email as a replacement for making contact.

"I haven't found it to be a problem," she added. Napolitano said people who need to reach her are able to do so through her staff (who she mentioned use email for her) and via phone.

Oh, and she doesn't tweet or text either.

It "allows me to focus" on what's important, she said.

Is Florida Really The Sunshine State?

Hello from Florida - The Sunshine State!

We get a lot of rain in Florida, so much rain that I often wonder if we deserve to be called "The Sunshine State" at all. This afternoon we had a storm with all sorts of crazy, sideways rain. It was so thick, and the wind so strong, the rain almost looked like fog rolling in.

For everyone who did not spend their Sunday afternoon in the Sunshine Rain State, I'm going to share our freakish thunderstorm with you:

Thunderstorm On A Sunday Afternoon In Florida Link

It did make for great afternoon reading weather.
Even if a flashlight was needed to see the words.

Do you enjoy afternoon thunderstorms?

Tips On Choosing The Affiliate Program That Suits You | Content for ...

Affiliate marketing plays a huge role in the growth of a business which benefits both the owners and the affiliates. Affiliates are people who own websites or traffic brokers who place a link on their sites or page and course traffic to your business offer. The merchant derives profit from the purchase of customers directed to their products through the links made by the affiliates while the latter gets paid for the customers he or she brings to the merchant.

1. Set a financial goal

This goal does not have to be a specific number or amount but it might be on a percentage basis. Your main purpose in joining an affiliate program is to earn money. Some affiliate programs offer huge percentages in terms of commissions while others are not as generous. Going for programs with bigger commissions would certainly be a wiser choice. The higher the commission they offer, the greater your income.

2. Analyze the different payment schemes and choose the one you think most beneficial on your part

The whole idea of affiliate marketing is earning through commissions. Through a program, the publisher enters into an agreement with the merchant as to how and when the former will be compensated.
