Apple's OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion for Mac goes Gold Master

Apple's OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion for Mac goes Gold Master

Apple has just released the Gold Master (GM) version of their upcoming Mac software update, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Previewed to media and developers earlier in the year, and shown off to the public at WWDC 2012, Mountain Lion brings even more of the iPad and iOS experience back to the Mac, including renamed Contacts and Calendar apps, and new Reminders, Dictation, AirPlay, Game Center, and Notification Center, and unique features like PowerNap and Gatekeeper.

A final release data is still uncertain, with Apple having mentioned only "July" by way of timeline. Typically a Gold Master means developers will have time to test and look for show stoppers, but if everything is good to go, we could be only a couple of weeks away.

If you're a developer, you can grab the OS X Mountain Lion GM now via developer.apple.com

Outrage at Afghan woman's execution on video

WARNING: Viewers may find this video disturbing. A crowd is seen cheering after watching the public execution of a woman accused of adultery.

By msnbc.com and news services

Outrage in Afghanistan and around the world grew on Monday after video emerged showing what officials said was a member of the Taliban shooting dead a woman accused of adultery in front of a crowd near Kabul, a sign that the austere Islamist group dictates law close to the Afghan capital.

"After 10 years (of foreign intervention), and only a few kilometres from Kabul... how could this happen in front of all these people?" female lawmaker Fawzia Koofi told Reuters after watching a video of the public execution.

"It is really very much a sharp turn, and a huge backward (step)," said the?campaigner for girls' education, wiping away tears as she spoke.?

Authorities in Kabul directly blamed the Islamist group. ?Meanwhile, the Taliban denied involvement in the killing in Parwan province, in which an unnamed woman's head and body were riddled with bullets at close range in punishment for alleged adultery.?

In Charikar, the provincial capital of Parwan about 15 miles south of Shinwari, where the killing took place,?Sayed Jalal?furrowed his eyebrows in anger as he vowed to avenge the execution.?

"We will take revenge for this. Their brutality and such inhumane acts are why we hate the Taliban," the 42-year-old shopkeeper said.?

6 US soldiers killed in roadside bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan

The execution was recorded in a three-minute video, obtained by Reuters, which shows a woman in a shawl being repeatedly shot in front of around 150 men perched on a hill, who cheer and praise the attackers, calling them "mujahideen", a term the Taliban call themselves.?

NATO's top commander in Afghanistan, U.S. General John Allen, called the killing "an atrocity of unspeakable cruelty."

Others in Charikar, from where a dirt road leads to Shinwari through rough terrain, lamented what they described as the Taliban's increasing sway over their once relatively peaceful area, about an hour's drive west from Kabul.?

"The Taliban are creating fear and trying to rule us through terrorism but they will never succeed," said Charikar resident Najibullah, 30, prompting approving nods from a crowd of men who had formed around him in a busy outdoor market.?

The Taliban dismissed the claims: "We have no operational update about this," spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said. Parwan's governor Basir Salangi said the Taliban carried out the killing in his province eight days ago.

Resurgent Taliban
Despite the presence of over 130,000 foreign troops and 300,000 Afghan soldiers and police, the Taliban have managed to resurge beyond their traditional bastions of the south and east, extending their reach into once more peaceful areas like Parwan.?

"This was a brutal act against the Afghan people by the Taliban," Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said.?

"They will be punished as they were punished 10 years ago and we will continue our struggle to eliminate them," he told Reuters, referring to their ousting from power in late 2001 by U.S.-backed Afghan forces after an austere five-year rule.?

The condemnation came on the day of a major donors' summit in Tokyo, where $16 billion in development aid was pledged for Afghanistan over the next four years as they try to prevent it from sliding back into chaos once most foreign troops have left by the end of 2014.?

US, Afghan officials condemn public execution of Afghan woman

In a declaration by summit participants, the importance of promoting women's rights was stressed repeatedly.?

The U.S. embassy in Kabul, condemning the public execution in the "strongest possible terms", said the hard-won gains of Afghan women made in the last 10 years must be protected.?

But Shah Jahan Yazdanparast, head of women's affairs in Parwan, which is connected to the Kabul ministry, said such naked violence as the woman's execution "will only increase our fear and concern as women in Afghanistan."

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and work since the Taliban were ousted from power but fears are mounting both at home and abroad that such freedoms could be traded away as Kabul seeks peace talks with the group.?

US delivers 'powerful commitment' to Afghanistan

"Afghan women and girls were looking to the international community to protect the progress they have made in the last decade and they have been let down," Oxfam Afghanistan's head of policy and advocacy, Louise Hancock, said on Sunday after the close of the Tokyo summit.?

Violence against women has increased sharply in the past year, according to Afghanistan's independent human rights commission. Activists say there is waning interest in women's rights on the part of President Hamid Karzai's government.?

Authorities blamed the Taliban for the stoning to death of a young couple in northern Kunduz province two years ago in a crowded bazaar, days after a pregnant widow was flogged and killed in western Baghdis province. The Taliban denied involvement.

Omaha neighborhood celebrates July 4th at annual parade

PHOTO SHOWCASE: Today's Fourth of July celebrations

* * * * *

Amy Farha-Neary started celebrating the Fourth of July at breakfast. She ate red, white and blue doughnuts.

She wore the same colors in a sequined one-piece suit for the J.E. George Boulevard Parade in Omaha. White feathers lined her pant cuffs and a sparkly red, white and blue crown completed the look.

The outfit was her cousin?s old dance costume, repurposed for the holiday.

?It?s an oldie but a goodie,? she laughed. ?Every year I dress up really goofy. My kids think it?s hilarious.?

?Sometimes you have to sacrifice for freedom and for fashion.?

The J.E. George parade was just one of the Fourth of July events happening across the metropolitan area. Other celebrations included the annual Ralston parade. Both parades attract scores of spectators and, especially in an election year, a number of politicians.

Several neighborhoods and organizations planned fireworks displays Wednesday night.

Farha-Neary said she attended the J.E. George parade in the Memorial Park neighborhood as a child and now brings her three children, ages 10, 8 and 5. She said the parade is a fun way to celebrate the community, friends, family and the Fourth.

?I grew up doing that, so it?s a tradition I want to keep up with my kids,? she said.

Hundreds lined the boulevard at 10 a.m. for the 62nd annual event. Mike and Jessica Cogswell brought their 10-month-old daughter, Lauren, for the first time.

?We came last year when I was pregnant,? Jessica said. ?So we decided to make it a tradition.?

The day had grown hotter by the time the Ralston parade started at 1 p.m. The air smelled like sunscreen. There were almost as many water bottles and coolers as people on the sidewalks.

Several groups set up chairs under umbrellas and awnings to watch the parade and escape the sun. The crowd applauded veterans and police, fire and rescue personnel as they marched or drove by.

Kids with face paint and outstretched hands scrambled for candy tossed into the crowd.

Mark Heavrin watched the floats amble by with a group of about 30 friends and family members.

?I come every year. It?s a great parade, and the weather is terrific,? he said from his spot in the shade.

Heavrin said he planned to grill hamburgers and bratwursts later in the afternoon and shoot off fireworks with his grandkids.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and U.S. Rep. Lee Terry marched in the J.E. George parade along with former Nebraska governor Bob Kerrey and State Sen. Deb Fischer of Valentine, who both are running for the U.S. Senate.

?It?s Fourth of July. That?s what this is all about,? Fischer said. ?Family, friends, community and the J.E. George parade is a great example of it.?

Kerrey said he was glad to spend the holiday in Omaha.

?It?s a great crowd and a fun celebration,? he said.

Suttle, Kerrey and Fischer also attended the Ralston parade, as did Gov. Dave Heineman.

IBM Labs pitches the future of augmented reality shopping with mobile app prototype

IBM Labs pitches the future of augmented reality shopping with mobile app prototype

From the same company that brought you the ThinkPad and the tank of a keyboard known as the Model M, today IBM is demonstrating its latest consumer development: a mobile shopping app. As odd as that sounds, it's no secret that Big Blue employs some rather brilliant folk, and now the company is looking to combine augmented reality with your everyday shopping habits. While still merely a prototype, the app will allow consumers to pan product aisles with their smartphone camera and view additional details on the screen. As IBM puts it, shoppers may input their own needs and preferences into the app, which can accommodate a wealth of information such as allergens, sugar content and bio-degradable packaging. Through partnerships with retailers, IBM also hopes to integrate promotions and loyalty schemes into the app, which it states will help stores better understand the buying habits of individual consumers. So there you have it, the future of shopping, as brought to you by IBM. As for the full PR, you'll find it after the break.

Porn producers eyeing Google's Project Glass for POV films

Project Glass

Hey, you knew this was going to happen, right? The adage rings true: A tech product isn't really successful until the porn industry, erm, hops on it. And while Google's Project Glass -- that space-age monocle that shoots video as well as brings info to eyeball level -- won't be available publicly for a couple of years, the adult industry is already licking its chops over the, erm, practical value of Project Glass, particularly for point-of-view (aka POV) scenes.

Pink Visual's Quentin Boyer told PCMag that "a device that allows you to shoot high quality video in a truly hands-free fashion will make shooting POV porn that much easier." A spokesperson for MiKandi, which provides a sort of porn portal in the form of an Android app, told industry pub XBIZ "we're already dreaming up ways to use the glasses to get shots (sex-related and otherwise) that just aren't feasible using a traditional camera setup."

As for us? We're just hoping we don't end up seeing the point of view shots of the bottom of a Cheetos bag with all the nerds that'll be playing with this thing. Here's to the future.

Ask Engadget: Are KIRFs worth it?

Ask Engadget Are KIRF's worth it

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Sabin, who wants a high-spec smartphone and is prepared to venture to the dark side to get it. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I know, I know. I sound like an idiot, but I'd like a full-featured smartphone without the hefty cost. I'm looking for an unlocked phone and came across some of the China Global iPhone KIRFs that run Android. I'm no slouch in loading ROMs, building jtags, etc., but I'd like to know if the hardware is solid, because I can make the software work if that's the case."

Putting aside the various ethical and legal quandaries for the moment, it's a very good question. Are KIRFs usable smartphones for those who know their way around tech? Does the hardware work to such a standard that you can expect useful performance and bluff your way through a crowd of those paying full price? Share your experiences with the group -- we're sure you'll feel better afterward.
