Bank of America brings live teller video chat to ATMs

Bank of America brings live teller chat to ATMs

If you're having trouble splitting those ATM deposits into both your savings and offshore accounts, Bank of America is there to help -- literally. Its new ATMs with Teller Assist add real-time video chat, letting you speak directly to an agent for more complex transactions. Starting this month in Boston, you'll be able to cash a check for the exact amount (including change) and select precise bill denominations for withdrawals, with functions like deposit splitting, cash back with deposit and credit card / loan payments rolling out later. The Teller Assist ATMs will run from 7 AM to 10 PM and hit locations across the rest of the US "throughout 2013." Beleaguered shift workers (or white collar criminals) can see more in the PR after the break.

Hilex Poly?s Bag-2-Bag Recycling Program Gets Nod

Hilex Poly Co., a US manufacturer and recycler of plastic bags, received the 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers Environmental Division?s Award for Plastics Recycling Technologies and Applications.

Hilex Poly received the award for its Bag-2-Bag recycling program, which consumers and retail employees can use to recycle plastic bags, sacks and wraps at grocery stores and other retailers.

Once collected (the company has over 30,000 collection points across the US) the bags are recycled into new bags.

Hilex Poly says it has invested more than $25 million in its recycling center, which recycled more than 20 million pounds of bags, sacks and wraps in 2012.

Employee has routine gripe about timekeeping? That's not ...

Employees who question your timekeeping process may be setting you up for an FLSA lawsuit. How you respond may make the difference between winning and losing.

If you promptly fix what turns out to have been an innocent mistake, the court probably won?t consider the original complaint protected activity. That?s good, especially if you ever have to discipline the employee. Reason: She won?t be able to call the discipline retaliation.

Recent case: Leslie was an attorney for a small law firm. One day, she gathered up her files, preparing to leave about 4:45 p.m. However, she didn?t leave until 10 minutes later, when she noticed that the office manager had already clocked her out at 4:45. She complained.

The office manager said she clocked Leslie out because it looked like she wasn?t working. Nevertheless, she said she would change the time sheet to reflect Leslie?s claimed departure time.

Later that evening, Leslie was apparently still upset. She called back and got into a heated argument about other employees taking too many breaks. The firm fired her because of the argument.

Leslie sued, alleging that her phone call was protected activity and her discharge amounted to retaliation.

The court didn?t buy it. It called the discussion about the time clock a routine matter that was quickly resolved. The court refused to allow a retaliation lawsuit to be based on such a flimsy complaint. (Montgomery v. Havner, No. 12-1977, 8th Cir., 2012)

Americans saving more but shy on stocks, reports suggest

Americans learned some difficult lessons during the Great Recession. The question arising from two recent studies of financial habits before and after the crisis is whether we learned them too well.

On the one hand, the crisis made us more frugal, according to "Five Years After," a report released this week by Fidelity Investments. Some 42 percent of 1,154 rank-and-file investors interviewed said they are contributing more to 401(k)s, IRAs or health savings accounts.

We're also more apt to live within our means: Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed said they have less personal debt now than they did five years ago.

Kathleen Murphy, president of Personal Investing at Fidelity Investments, attributes Americans' new-found thrift directly to the deprivations they suffered during the recession. "Emerging from the depths of the crisis, many investors found resolve and started taking control of their personal economy," she said.

Their pro-active behavior has paid off in mental as well as financial security: More than half of Fidelity's respondents said they felt more prepared and less scared than they did before the crisis.

On the other hand, our frugality seems to be based on fear. A new report from the research firm Spectrem Group found that Americans have developed a mistrust of the stock market, especially when it comes to their retirement savings. Just 36 percent of investors' 401(k) assets are devoted to stocks, down from 40 percent before the crisis, Spectrem's report found.

In the same period, investment in stable but low-earning money market funds had risen from 21 percent of assets to 16 percent between 2006 and the end of 2012.

In the short run, this conservative posture doesn't seem to have hurt us much. The average 401(k) balance has soared to record highs with the sustained boom in the stock market, rising 12 percent in the last quarter of 2012 alone.

But experts are concerned that workers' aversion to risk causes them to miss out on the long-term gains that the stock market has historically afforded. While Spectrem found that faith in the stock market was improving overall, seniors who had already crossed the retirement finish line were more likely to express confidence in equities than those still saving. Barely a third of active workers in Spectrem's survey called themselves confident in the power of the stock market.

If the retail investor is not stoking the Dow, where is the boom coming from? As CNBC's Jeff Cox has noted, the market's recent surge has come as cash-rich companies have plowed nearly $1.2 trillion into stock buybacks since mid-2009 as individual investors have largely stayed pat in the cash, bonds, and other instruments built to weather another storm.

PFT: Exonerated?LB Banks signs with Falcons

Brian BanksAP

By now, Brian Banks is used to waiting.

He sat in prison for five years, punished for a crime he didn?t commit.? Freed last May after the victim admitted she had falsely accused him, the former USC recruit has been trying patiently but persistently to get a shot at the NFL.

Finally, he?s getting one.

Jay Glazer of FOX, who has worked extensively with Banks to get him into NFL shape, reports that the Atlanta Falcons have signed Banks to a contract.

Banks, a linebacker, received tryouts last year from the Seahawks, Chargers, and Chiefs.? Eventually, he joined the UFL ? and then the UFL promptly imploded.

The NFL won?t be imploding any time soon.? But the road for Banks remains steep.

Teams may have up to 90 players on the roster in the offseason.? He?ll now have to earn one of 53 regular-season spots or, failing that, one of eight jobs on the practice squad.

But at least he finally has a chance.? We wish him well as he tries to make the most of it.
